JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • This position is eligible for a one-time signing bonus for certified first-year employees.*

Creates a classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth of students enrolled in an education setting. Establishes effective rapport with students. Motivates students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for becoming a responsible citizen in accordance with each pupil's ability.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works collaboratively with teachers, administrators, parents, school and agency counselors and related service providers to support students who require special education services.

  • Assists in the development and implementation of the individual education service and transition plan for students enrolled in the education setting.

  • Guide students through a program of study which meets stated objectives and prepares students to master grade level standards.

  • Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and policies and procedures of Birmingham City Schools.

  • Collaborates with the teacher of record to develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with curriculum standards; provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students.

  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize the available time for instruction and to actively engage students.

  • Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, and keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports, and other recordkeeping activities

as necessary.

  • Communicates regularly with parents or guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress and areas of concern.

  • Supervises and monitors student movement and escorts students to resources, bathrooms, buses, cafeteria, room changes and other activities in the building.

  • Administers standardized testing.

  • Use current technology for instruction and management purposes.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom by providing positive reinforcement of acceptable behaviors and modifying unacceptable behaviors.

  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

  • Ability to compile and analyze data, interpret the laws, policies, and regulations pertaining to the work.

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Effective oral and written communication.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university.

  • Valid Alabama Professional Certificate.

  • Must meet Every Student Succeed Act (ESSA) federal and state. requirements or a willingness to meet the requirements.

  • SUCH ALTERNATIVES TO THE ABOVE QUALIFICATIONS AS THE BOARD MAY REQUIRE.

Salary Range: From/To Certified Schedule 16 ($45,664 - $92,035)
