The City of Folsom's Parks and Recreation department is currently recruiting for multiple Zookeeper Aides (Part-Time, Temporary) at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary. Zookeeper Aides perform relief zookeeper duties including exhibit cleaning, diet preparation, record keeping, and administering medications under the supervision of the Zoo Supervisor. Incumbents should be self-motivated, detailed oriented, able to follow direction, have the ability to work independently, and comply with all zoo safety standards. The Zookeeper Aid position falls under the Recreation Leader classification series.
Schedule
Must have ability to work at least two days a week at least one of which must be a Saturday or Sunday. Hours are 8:00am-4:30pm (7:00am-3:30pm in summer).
Holiday and weekend work is required.
Pay & Benefits
Non-exempt, hourly.
Part-time/Seasonal positions are hourly and not eligible for benefits and are limited to working 999 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). No full-time regular appointment will be made from this class.
Note: Unfortunately current active CalPERS members are ineligible for employment with part-time/seasonal positions.NOTE: The duties of a Zookeeper Aide, may include, but are not limited to the following.
Exhibit cleaning and minor exhibit repair
Groundskeeping
Preparation of and feeding out of animal diets (including prey items, raw meat, and insects)
Providing behavioral enrichment, administering medications,
Record keeping
Public speaking
Other related duties as assigned.
Zookeeper Aides will have interaction with the public and in doing so, represent the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary as well as the City.NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the "Examples of Essential Duties" section of this specification.
Knowledge of:
Practices and methods of customer service; techniques and principles of effective interpersonal communication.
Modern office equipment, methods, procedures, and computer hardware and software.
Report writing techniques.
Proper safety protocols.
Sanitation and disinfection techniques.
Ability to:
Demonstrate enthusiasm, positive energy, self-motivation, and maturity.
Communicate well orally and in writing.
Organize, prioritize and pace duties and tasks.
Follow oral and written directions.
Establish and maintain effective, cooperative working relationships with coworkers and the public.
Education
Must be at least 18 years of age by time of hire.
High school graduate, G.E.D., or equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade.
Experience
Physical Requirements
Work is performed in a typical outdoor environment on a year-round basis. (1) Mobility: frequent performance of manual labor, frequent standing, or walking; frequent climbing, reaching, bending, stooping, crawling, and squatting. (2) Lifting: frequent lifting up to 50 pounds. (3) Vision: constant use of overall vision. (4) Dexterity: frequent grasping, holding, reaching, hand/shoulder/elbow movements. (5) Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person. (6) Emotional/Psychological: frequent coworker and public contact; frequent working alone and independent. (7) Environment: frequent exposure to outside elements (sun, wind, rain); loud noise, animal dander, and other environmental substances.
Other Requirements:
The successful candidate is made a conditional offer subject to a background check, which requires DOJ fingerprint clearance and a pre-employment physical, including screening for drug and alcohol use.
