Primary Purpose of this Position:

The North Carolina Zoo is seeking an experienced emergency operation individuals with Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. The Ranger Branch plays a crucial role in supporting the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (NCDNCR) and the NC Zoo by providing a variety of public safety services and programs. These efforts are aimed at creating a secure environment for guests, employees, facilities, and diverse collections of animals, plants, and art. The range of services includes around-the-clock security, parkwide radio and telephone communication operations, emergency response and planning, management of life safety systems (such as sprinklers, fire hydrants, fire extinguishers, and fire alarms), medical services delivered by Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), parking and traffic control, escorting vendors and contractual staff, conducting or assisting with tours, delivering public information and education, overseeing a lost and found program, and facilitating access to the Park after regular hours. The branch's operations are intricately integrated into the strategic and operational planning of the Zoo. The team within this branch is responsible for executing security operations in a manner consistent with the Zoo's identity as both a tourist destination and an accredited institution. This position operates under the direct supervision of the Ranger Branch Supervisors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide outstanding customer service to park guests.

  • Aid guests in navigating the Zoo premises.

  • Assist in escorting guests out of the park.

  • Assist in parking vehicles and directing traffic.

  • Manage lost or separated guests.

  • Assist in managing our lost and found program.

  • Provide first aid to guests and staff.

  • Always interact with guests and staff in a professional manner.

  • Swiftly attend to radio calls for assistance.

  • Address guest complaints and emotionally charged incidents with professionalism.

  • Respond appropriately and assist in emergency situations.

  • Operate golf carts and vehicles safely within the park.

  • Adhere to all safety policies and guidelines.

  • Acquire comprehensive knowledge of park policies and procedures.

  • Fulfill any other duties as assigned.

Medical Response

  • As a North Carolina certified EMT you will respond to medical emergencies and provide care in accordance with the Randolph County EMS Pre-Hospital Care Program.

Emergency Management

  • Recognize emergencies and work within the guidelines of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and NC Zoo policies and procedures.

  • Respond appropriately and assist in emergency situations.

Safety and Security

  • Patrol the interior and exterior of facilities (~100 buildings) to secure and protect the 500-plus developed acres of property and grounds against fire, damage, theft or other hazards.

  • Recognize unusual, suspicious or hazardous situations and take appropriate action.  Make reports as necessary.

  • Ensure the safety and security of all guests and staff, exhibits, animal collection, plant collection and work areas.

  • Politely and diplomatically enforce policies and procedures concerning both guests and employees.

  • Recognize, identify and report safety issues.

Communications and Administrative

  • Ability to learn and operate a Zoo wide communications center to include radio dispatch, data entry, multiple phone lines, alarm panels, key access and video surveillance.

  • Ability to maintain records and prepare written reports as needed.

Guest Services

  • Provide guests with exceptional front-line customer service, greet schools and bus tour groups, assist with parking, provide information and assistance to guests; provide guest escorts, handle guest complaints and problems; offer first aid as needed, respond to and report guest accidents and injuries.

Job Requirements:

  • First shift
  • 10 hours, 8:00 a.m.

  • 6:00 p.m. Work schedule is Sunday through Wednesday or Wednesday through Saturday to include holidays that fall during these workdays.

  • Considered "Essential/Mandatory Staff" and required to work on adverse weather days, and during zoo emergencies.

  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid NC driver's license within 30 days of employment.

  • The selected candidate must have and maintain North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. OR: the selected candidate must be able to obtain their EMT certification within one year of employment.

  • Required to participate in an occupational health program due to contact with animal containment areas.

  • Must have the agility and physical ability to regularly and safely: sit, bend, reach, stand, walk, lift and carry 30 lbs. (and up to 50 lbs. occasionally); endure extended outdoor field conditions at any time of the year; negotiate uneven outdoor terrain on foot; hear and respond to radio communication; and drive motor vehicles during the day and at night.

  • Demonstrated experience with identifying safety and security hazards.

Management Preference:
