Zone Construction Inspector (Registry)

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under the direction of the Construction Inspection Supervisor in the Engineering Division.

Inspects all phases of construction work and grading on various projects being constructed under contract by the City of Memphis to ensure that procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications. Measures distances to verify accuracy of dimensions of structural installations. Observes work in progress to insure that procedures followed and materials used conform to specifications.

Interprets blueprints and specifications. Records quantities of materials received and used. Maintains daily diary of construction and inspection activities.

Computes monthly estimates of work completed and materials used. Prepares sketches of construction installations that deviate from blueprints and reports such changes for incorporation on master blueprints. Drives to various locations to inspect construction sites as needed.

Investigates citizen complaints and reports back to supervisor of action taken. Consults with property owners and contractors concerning right-of way agreements.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

1.Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned from time to time.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires the use of basic measuring tools such as levels and measuring tapes.

Requires the ability to operate an automobile. Requires the ability to traverse over uneven surfaces.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is performed outdoors exposed to changing weather conditions.

Work schedule varies depending on schedule of construction company. Requires travel throughout the City to inspect construction sites, including sewer lines along the Wolf River. May involve working on Saturdays. Involves contact with contractors and citizens.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduate and three (3) years experience in civil construction work or construction inspections; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license as a condition of continued employment.

The City Charter requires that City Employees must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire.
