Youth Tutor, AmeriCorps EXL

The goal of the program is to provide comprehensive support to students who aren't working at grade level, leading to improved performance and academic success. The program applies a layered approach implemented by the AmeriCorps EXL Tutors for K - 8 students.

All students at the school site benefit from the support of organized collaborative games and conflict resolution during recess/break and lunch. Students in need of additional supports will be assessed and assigned targeted tutoring services in literacy and/or math. Essential AmeriCorps Duties Active Recess:

Active Recess is structured and organized activities facilitated by adults in order to include students in games / sports while building conflict resolution skills. • Plan and facilitate active recess activities and games during core day and after school recess/breaks and lunch times, focusing on supporting positive student behaviors • Members are assigned a daily game that they facilitate and engage with students.

Academic Tutoring: Tutors will work with students who are academically below grade level in literacy and / or math skills. • Tutoring:

Lead daily 30-minute academic tutoring sessions with students 1-to-1, in pairs, or in small groups. • Students will work with the Tutor for half of the school year. • Tutors will facilitate lessons. These lesson plans are created by the member and / or provided by the teacher. • Tutors will support approximately 20 students throughout the course of the school year. Expanded Learning Support:

Expanded Learning programs support selected students beyond the classroom, often outside the normal school day hours. Expanded Learning programs are often referred to as Afterschool Programs. • Support the after school program daily via the homework help hour. • Members will engage with groups of students to lead physical, SEL (social emotional learning), and enrichment activities. • Members will facilitate the student summer program. Member Duties : This role provides an opportunity to be part of a team working towards closing the achievement gap and removing barriers to learning. Tutors will support the academic and social skills development of high-need students. Specific duties include: • Plan and lead focused activities to embed positive behavior • Encourage participation, attendance and engagement through parent nights, clubs, field trips, and homework support • Plan and lead daily paired, tutoring sessions focusing on Literacy or Math • Participate in professional development and National Service events to support the local community • Develop skills in data collection and analysis, event planning, and communication
