Job Summary

Under the general supervision of sports staff, this position is responsible for the administration, supervision and instruction of various youth sports programs for the Parks and Recreation Department. Responsible for supervision of meet/practice details as well as supervision of all other coaches, volunteers, participants and crowds.

The Youth Sports Coach acts as a liaison between the program and the full time sports staff as well as site supervisors and other organization's coaches. This position serves as a role model and an effective communicator across multiple groups - children, adults, parents, co-workers and supervisors.

This posting is specifically for coaching CARA Track.

Examples of Essential Duties

Instruct youth under the age of 18 in the fundamental skills of the sport for which they are hired (i.e. Softball, Track and Field).

Create a positive learning environment where the children learn sportsmanship, fundamental skills, teamwork, and responsibility.

Responsible for planning, monitoring, and evaluating age-appropriate drills, training and activities for participants.

Maintain program quality by providing a fun, safe and recreational environment.

Develop and implement a schedule and practice plan for every practice.

Supervise program and participants at all times.

Provide positive reinforcement to program participants and lead activities in a positive and enthusiastic manner.

Remain attentive and involved throughout all practices, meets, events and interactions. Meets and events may be held in Parker and throughout the Denver Metro Area.

Coordinate practice set-up and clean-up.

Act as a liaison between participants, parents, the Town of Parker and when appropriate the Colorado Association of Recreational Athletics (CARA) or Colorado Parks and Recreation Association (CPRA).

Collect and verify roster and participant contact information, as needed.

Communicate necessary information to program participants.

Plan and conduct a parent meeting for prior to the season starting.

For CARA or CPRA coaches, attend Coaches meetings for CARA programs and communicate with meet directors and event hosts as needed.

Supervise and direct Assistant Coaches throughout each season to ensure efficiency.

Supervise and direct volunteers, particularly when required to provide volunteers at CARA Track meets.

Transport necessary program equipment to games, meets and practices. Inventory equipment before and after each season.

Provide proper first aid when injuries occur. Notify the Sports Coordinator(s) when the first aid kit needs replenished.

Fill out and turn in an Incident Report to the Sports Coordinator(s) the day after any injury occurs that requires more than simple first aid. Call 911 for any severe injury.

Report to the Sports Coordinator(s) throughout season to ensure program quality is maintained.

Maintain conditions of each sport facility utilized throughout the season, including Town owned facilities and rented facilities.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

Performs related duties as needed and as assigned by the Sports Coordinator or Sports Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Must be 18 years of age or older. Must have technical knowledge of the sport in which the coach is hired.

Previous coaching experience or certification is preferred.

CPR, First Aid and AED certification required within ninety (90) days of hire.

Concussion recognition training is required within ninety (90) days of hire and must be renewed annually.

A combination of education and experience to provide the following knowledge, skills and abilities.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Basic knowledge of the rules of the sport in which the coach is hired. Ability to learn, understand and enforce understanding of the Town of Parker's adapted rules and regulations or CARA rules as applicable.

Ability to work with youth under the age of 18.

Evenings and weekends are required.

Ability to demonstrate techniques of individual sports.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, various community organizations, and the general public.

Ability to accept criticism.

Ability to effectively meet and deal with the public and to handle stressful situations.

Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions, and the ability to issue clear concise verbal and/or written instructions to subordinates and other employees and report operations both verbally or in written form to superiors.

Ability to deal effectively with emergency situations.

Ability to be flexible in work schedule.

Ability to follow supervisor's instructions.

Ability to spend 8 consecutive hours outside.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include normal vision to perform routine observation, reading and writing; moderate vision to operate equipment such as calculators, typewriters, and/or word processors; close vision for reading detailed charts or computer printouts; depth perception required for operating vehicles or equipment.
