Description of Work

Position Definition:This position works under the direct supervision of the department supervisor using established policies and procedures to provide library services for patrons in the Youth Services department, which serves patrons from birth to twelfth grade and their caregivers. Duties include collection maintenance; reference and reader's advisory; technical support using library electronic resources; explanation of basic library functions, services and resources; providing referral services to patrons in person and by email and telephone; remaining abreast of library access trends and development; implementation and promotion of a variety of programs for a culturally diverse community that empower and motivate young people while promoting and nurturing the love of reading. This position requires working some evenings and weekends.

Example of Duties:

  • Maintains current knowledge of library technology, equipment and service trends. Establishes priorities in performance of assigned duties.

  • Completes and reports to department supervisors the accomplishment of verbal and written instructions.

  • Recommends materials to be added to the library using standard library selection tools.

  • Plans and prepares bibliographies and booklists.

  • Maintains the children's and young adult collections by regular examination and weeding.

  • Collects data for statistical analysis and reports.

  • Plans programs with parents, youth/youth groups and local educators to link the library to the community.

  • Designs and conducts engaging activities that help young people develop their creativity, interests, and talents

  • Conducts preschool story times, visits to daycare facilities and class visits and library tours.

  • Hosts book clubs, parent education classes, literacy programs and summer reading programs.

  • Creates website posts.

  • Plans and implements public relations activities through outreach and internal displays.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of professional library methods, reference resources and practices; knowledge of children's and young adult titles, authors and readers interests; ability to follow and enforce library policies and procedures; ability to work independently with minimum supervision; ability to prioritize assigned duties and reporting accomplished tasks to supervisor; excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work professionally and courteously with a diverse population; effective written and verbal communication skills; strong planning, time management, organizational skills; proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite and Mac; proficiency with virtual meeting tools such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams; expertise using resource sharing software and productivity tools; ability to maintain confidentiality of library users' records; skill in the operation of computer systems; skill in applying library research methods and practices; ability to collaborate with local agencies; knowledge of and experience with PCs, LANs, electronic devices and the Internet.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Library Science, and practical experience in children's/YA librarianship, internship included, are required. Experience with creating promotional materials, flyers, press releases email newsletters and website graphics are a plus.
