JOB SUMMARY

As a Youth Program Instructor, you lead and teach programs filled with a variety of engaging activities to feed the mind, body and spirit of our Youth ages 8-14. Activities are designed to develop positive character traits and build relationships based on the Y's core values. Instructors may teach classes in content areas such as art, technology, crafts, cooking and more.

You will achieve the primary areas of focus by: engaging participants in a variety of activities; chaperoning behavior and using the Core Values to correct undesired behaviors, engaging in the activities with the Youth, setting up and cleaning up activities, and fostering an atmosphere where youth make important connections with each other and you as an adult role model. You will also communicate with other Y staff to deliver SMART Service to our Youth and other Y members.

Employment Type: Part-time (less than 30 hours per week, not eligible for the Y's benefit package)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Teach a class based upon a preset curriculum and engage youth in an educational setting.

  • Communicate with parents regarding program content and classroom concerns as needed.

  • Facilitate a variety of weekly program offerings from physical play to non-physical, structured and free play.

  • Provide positive redirection when our program participants exhibit negative behaviors.

  • Provide feedback on programming ideas based on experience and feedback from program participants.

  • Cultivate relationships and demonstrate SMART service at all times with our program participants and caregivers.

  • Act according to facility protocol to ensure safety of all staff and children which includes:

  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with staff and children.

  • Attend required abuse risk management training.

  • Report suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.

  • Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.

SKILLS AND TRAINING

  • Must be 16 years old.

  • Experience working with middle school aged children is desired.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends and evenings required.

  • Excellent communication skills tailored to the appropriate audience.

  • Physical Requirements: For the most part, the work is done in a recreation environment where you will need to engage in active games, sports and other activities. Moving about freeing to assist coworkers in other work areas is important. The ability to lift at least 30 pounds to set up equipment will be necessary.
