Murdoch Developmental Center is currently accepting applications for Youth Program Education Assistant I's. Youth Program Education Assistant I's provide direct support and facilitate daily programming activities for intellectually/developmentally disabled children, teens, and young adults who exhibit extreme behavioral challenges. Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Providing supervision and ensuring safety of individuals

  • Assisting in educational and/or vocational programming

  • Facilitating indoor/outdoor leisure activities and encouraging participation

  • Crisis-intervention which includes de-escalation of aggressive individuals and, at times, physical interventions

  • Facilitate goals in areas of grooming, hygiene, dining, and residential skills to promote independence

  • Participate in Community outings

  • Assisting individuals in areas of daily living skills while promoting their independence

  • Transportation when needed for school, outings, appointment, etc.

  • Writing monthly progress notes for goals and recording of behavior data

  • Meal preparation and following nutrition guidelines

  • Coaching in areas of social skills, community safety awareness, problem solving

Multiple positions and shifts available across several programs. These full-time positions are eligible for the full State of North Carolina employee benefit package including health insurance and retirement benefits.

Work Schedule Shift Premium1st Shift:6:30am-3:00pm 5% Weekend Only

2nd Shift 11:30am-8:00pm (Floater) 20% Weekday & 25% Weekend

2nd Shift: 2:30pm-11:00pm 20% Weekday & 25% Weekend

3rd Shift: 10:45pm-6:45am 10% Weekday & 15% Weekends

Shifts include alternating weekends and holidays as scheduled. These positions are designated as mandatory and required to work as scheduled during periods of inclement weather.

Salary Grade MH05

Recruitment Range $34,084 - $51,125

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

To receive credit for all of your work history and credentials, you must list the information on the application form.   • Experience working with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities and/or mental illness

  • Working knowledge of basic health care, hygiene and safety

  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and follow both oral and written instructions

  • Proven ability to report information both orally and in writing

  • Current North Carolina State driver's license

  • Ability to obtain and maintain all facility required training (CPI, CPR, First Aid, and other job-related training)

Management Preferences:

  • Previous experience providing support to individuals who exhibit extreme behavioral challenges that may escalate to physically aggressive behavior

  • Experience in utilizing de-escalation strategies with individuals

  • Demonstrated ability to implement behavior support plans

  • Prior experience in assisting individuals in educational and/or vocational programming

NAI and NAII Certification is NOT required for this position.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate s degree in human services or related degree from an appropriately accredited institution;

or

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications As required by facility, CPR certification and listing as a Nurse Aide I or Nurse Aide II by the NC Division of Health Service Regulation required prior to providing direct patient care.

These services are in the form of behavioral programming, habilitative training/activities, and in assisting with health care needs to whatever degree is necessary. Health care ranges from minimal levels of assistance with relatively independent individuals to extensive supervision to protect individuals from injuring themselves or others. The shift leader can assign work to the assistant, including acting for the leader. This position is exposed to a danger element and stressful environment due to extremely aggressive/explosive behavior of individuals. MDC in Butner serves 25 counties in central NC. Murdoch has approximately 1600 employees providing residential services and supports to people with IDD, complex behavioral challenges and/or medical conditions whose clinical treatment needs exceed the level of care available in the community. In addition to regional admissions for adults, MDC operates four statewide programs, which include support for children and adolescents with complex needs. Centrally located, MDC is convenient to Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill.
