Position Overview:
The Youth Minister is responsible for providing Christian formation for Middle School children, High School teens and Young Adults. The responsibilities of the Youth Minister include the sacrament of Confirmation program, the youth and young adult ministry curriculum through the implementation of programs that support the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, supervise volunteers, recruit catechists, plan and lead meetings, schedule classes and facilities, order materials and books, and in general, carry out program organizational details. It is important that the Youth Minister encourages opportunities for involvement in parish life. Youth Ministry provides primary leadership for the implementation of parish ministry to junior high and high school youth, the Young Adults according to the USCCB's eight components of youth ministry.
Primary Objectives:
To form Disciples of Christ by attending to the growth and development of each young person in the way of the Gospel.
To assist parents and families in the faith formation of their young people.
To encourage each young person to listen and respond to the particular mission and vocation God has for them.
To provide support to young people in the faith community and to integrate them into the life of the parish, and the Church as a whole.
To promote life-long spiritual formation and education of young people.
To foster an awareness of the poor and the marginalized through a commitment to service and justice opportunities
Duties and Responsibilities:
Faith formation of young people in the Catholic tradition, including a two- year Confirmation program
The primary focus is the sacramental preparation for the teens to receive the sacrament of Confirmation
Implementation, coordination, and support of a weekly/monthly High School Youth Group, a Junior High Youth Program, and of the Young Adult Ministry, as necessary and as need arises
Recruitment and management of adult volunteers, and high school Core Team (juniors and seniors) for Confirmation, youth nights, and junior high ministry
Coordinates retreats, service opportunities, fundraisers, assists other ministries, and other event
Plan, evaluate, and complete all administration-related office work and communicate with co-workers. Is proactive in communicating needs and problems to pastor and staff
Maintains appropriate and detailed record keeping
Maintains a steady, prompt, proactive communication with pastor, staff, and parents
Attends the regular Sacred Heart staff meeting
Maintains regular office hours
Attend Diocesan workshops and meetings necessary to grow professionally in one's ministry
All other duties assigned by the pastor
Position Requirements:
Active, practicing member of the Catholic Church, and excellent knowledge and adherence of Church teaching and life
Must maintain appropriate certifications (see below) and attend enrichment courses and programs as appropriate
Desire and enthusiasm for working with all age demographics
Highly self- motivated, creative, energetic, and assertive
Has some experience in the parish setting
Demonstrates spiritual and emotional maturity
Strong organizational skills, including time management, delegation, planning, budgeting, and ability to balance multiple projects at a time
Ability to manage and engage key stakeholders including parents, core team members, all teenagers, staff members and adult volunteers.
Close collaboration with Pastor and Religious Education Coordinator to meet the pastoral needs of the whole parish community
Demonstrate capability to carry out administrative and supervisory duties in a timely fashion, utilizing good communication and relationship skills.
Participate in ongoing formation and educational opportunities to keep current on trends in catechetical ministry.

Computer skills in Microsoft Office products
Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
Current California Catechists Certificate
Completed or enrolled in CMD Certificate Program for Youth Ministry
Experience working with youth ministry at a parish (volunteer or paid)
Successful completion of parish Safe Environment program
Bachelor's degree in Theology or related field preferred
Certified as a Master Catechist preferred
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to remain in an office at a computer workstation and access information from a computer and use a telephone. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the office, as well as maneuver throughout the Sacred Heart campus to attend meetings, briefings, and other work-related events. The office for this position is located at the Sacred Heart Academy Pre School building a block away from the church. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend meetings or events. The employee must be able to climb stairs. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
