Youth Mental Health Corps-(Detroit Youth Success Program)

Youth Mental Health Corps Members (YMHC) was created via a public-private collaboration with a robust set of partners. The Youth Mental Health Corps will address the growing needs of young people while creating career pathways to address the national shortage of mental health professionals.

YMHC Fellows are a select subset of AmeriCorps members serving through the Detroit AmeriCorps Youth Success Program, one of several Michigan's AmeriCorps programs engaged in Youth Mental Health Corps activities. Corps members serving as Youth Mental Health Corps Fellows will be trained as navigators serving young people in schools and community organizations. The Detroit AmeriCorps Youth Program is an academic intervention and support program focusing on students in grades 1st-8th.

We currently have programming in 9 school sites across the City of Detroit that work towards mentoring students to reduce chronic absenteeism. Most of the students we work with have an average of 20% absenteeism per academic year for various reasons. These reasons include chronic homelessness, and lack of access to food, electricity, water, and/or transportation, which create many barriers hindering their success at school that we will work to eliminate.

Our mentors serve part-time (15-25 hrs/week), which is about 3-4 days/week, in the schools with a cohort of 15-20 students. Monthly professional development training, service projects, and conferences are included in your annual service. Further help on this page can be found by clicking here.

Member Duties : YMHC Fellows will gain valuable on-the-job experience and earn credentials to advance their career in the following career pathway: School/CBO-Based Pathway.

AmeriCorps Members interested in serving in schools, out-of-school programs and community-based organizations (CBOs) will receive intensive professional development and training on topics pertinent to this career path. In addition to robust training and development, YMHC Fellows will be provided access to certification opportunities that align with the skills and abilities necessary for a successful career in schools and a variety of other community-based organizations. Additionally, YMHC Fellows will be part of a team to help decrease chronic absence by mentoring youth during the school year between the grades of 1st-8th grade who are in Tier II (missing 10-19% of school) to facilitate problem-solving and be a positive role model.
