Job Role Summary

Senior Landman position with strong emphasis on Acquisitions and Divestitures.

Job Role Responsibilities

  • Handle land related responsibilities in Acquisitions and Divestitures with supervision from a Division Landman or Regional Land Manager.

  • Manage brokers for title research and due diligence, obtain Title Opinions and cure defects.

  • Assist with preparation of all necessary documents to transfer title and close complex oil and gas transactions.

  • Assist with negotiating various agreements governing oil and gas transactions (Purchase and Sale Agreements, Exchange Agreements, etc.) with other companies.

  • Prepare all necessary regulatory filings handled by the land department.

  • Prepare all necessary internal paper work in a timely manner.

  • Job will include travel to oversee due diligence, attend closings, and as needed for meetings with representatives from other companies.

Expected Level of Proficiency

  • Upstream oil and gas knowledge and a minimum of 3 years of in-house Landman experience

  • Bachelor's Degree with concentration in Petroleum Land Management, Energy Management or related field, Law Degree, or Master of Business Administration

  • Excellent collaboration, communication and interpersonal skills

  • Project management skills; ability to deliver results in a performance driven and team-oriented environment

  • Ability to work with other departments within XTO and ExxonMobil and work with counterparts in other companies

  • Strong negotiation skills

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Effective negotiation, advocacy and influencing skills

  • Strong critical thinking skills; ability to exercise business judgment/make sound decisions

  • Detail oriented and capable of producing results in time constrained situations

  • Adaptable to changing business needs and requests

  • Acquisitions and divestitures experience

  • Surface fee / easements / ROW acquisition experience

  • Damage claim settlement experience

  • Experience with GIS and Land Systems (Quorum preferred)

We are looking for an experienced and motivated individual to fill the position of Landman within the Lease Records team of the Land Administration Department. As an integral member of the Land Department, the Landman is part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for the identification and capture of exploration, development and production opportunities for Oxy. The Landman provides analytical support for acquisition, maintenance and disposition of leases and contracts within a designated geographic area, and working as part of a team with Land Operations. In coordination with the Land Negotiator, the Landman plays an invaluable role within the Land Department by leveraging Land expertise and skills to enhance the value of Oxy's Land Assets. Additionally, the Landman must represent Oxy with the highest degree of professionalism and integrity when interacting with the Texas RRC, New Mexico OGC, ONRR, working interest owners, royalty interest owners, surface owners, and associates from other Oil and Gas Companies. Responsibilities Include * Perform due diligence, review and setup of newly acquired oil and gas leases and contracts to identify title defects, assure the purchase of valid leases, identify, input and manage obligations. * Assist in property divestiture and acquisition projects by review and interpretation of title and ownership data, determination of preferential rights and consents to assign provisions, prepare title reports and exhibits. * Review the status of title, provide title due diligence, cure title defects and otherwise reduce title risk associated with ownership in minerals or the acquisition and divestiture of mineral properties. * Determine ownership in minerals through the research of public and private records, review information from multiple data sources (Texas RRC, New Mexico OGC, Drilling Info, County Courthouses, etc.) and have the technical Land knowledge to correct imperfect data. * Establish and maintain accurate oil and gas contract records to assure the continued validity of leases and compliance with contract terms; manage rights and/or obligations derived from ownership of interests in leases and minerals. * Review producing leases for well statuses and, if production ceases, advise Land Negotiators on what actions are required to maintain the lease. * Act as a liaison with internal and external customers to resolve ownership problems, royalty/rental inquiries and release demands. * Prepare lease and acreage reports for business unit and executive level review, and understand the reasons behind variances * Coordinate the payment of lease rentals, shut-in royalties and minimum royalties to assure that they are timely and accurately paid. Academic: * Bachelor's degree in Petroleum Land Management, Energy Management, Business or a related field, Masters in Business Administration (M.B.A.) or Law degree (J.D.) from an accredited Law school Experience: * Minimum of 5 years of in-house, broad-based working experience in traditional operations Land Negotiator roles, mineral ownership, division orders, or Land Administration (Permian Basin experience preferred) Technical Skills: * Strong understanding of lease and contract agreements that impact leasehold * Able to identify and examine lease and contract provisions and a technical understanding of how they impact operations * Strong understanding of the correlation of interest types and how they contribute to acreage calculations (Working Interest, Royalty Interest, Overriding Royalty Interest, Non-Participating Royalty Interest, Mineral Interest, Lessors Interest, Wellbore Working Interest, Contractual Interest, etc.) * Thorough knowledge of title, including burden ties, as well as complex agreements * Experience using Quorum Land Systems and ArcGIS * Proficient in basic Microsoft Excel functions (sort, filter, remove duplicates, vertical lookup, pivot tables, etc.) * Understanding of applicable county, state and federal regulatory rules and procedures Job-Related Skills: * Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and reach closure within established timeframes * Excellent verbal/written communication, organization and time management skills * Excellent problem solving skills; action-oriented and solution-driven * Demonstrated project management skills * Self-aware, flexible and open-minded * Outstanding team player with strong interpersonal skills * Excellent research skills and ability to generate and interpret complex data on a spreadsheet or in a database * Highly accurate and detail-oriented * Track record of initiating and developing new ideas that promote efficiency and better work processes Additional Qualifications: * AAPL and/or local Landman Association memberships, as well as having RP, RPL, or CPL status, are a plus but not required * NALTA and/or local Title Association memberships, as well as having CPLTA status, are a plus but not required * NADOA and/or local Division Order Association memberships, as well as having CDOA status, are a plus but not required * Experience in SAP/PRA and Data Base coding languages are a plus but not required Occidental is an Equal Opportunity Employer/Individual with Disability/Veteran Status Oxy Houston TX
