Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

Performs direct patient care in a compassionate and timely manner and applies the art and skill of diagnostic imaging through the safe and effective use of radiologic technology.

Essential Job Functions

  • Demonstrates knowledge of direct patient care by evaluating the patient, verifying patient ID, and related information to assure appropriate procedure is performed; explains procedure to patient; prepares patient for procedure by obtaining and recording patient history and consent form (if applicable); ensures patient comfort, privacy, and safety during procedure; monitors condition of patient and medical equipment that may be disturbed due to the nature of exam and report changes to patient care services.

  • Properly positions patient to perform routine diagnostic radiographs; calculates and selects proper technical factors based on information such as age, medical history and suspected pathology; assesses quality of radiographs with minimal supervision; competently performs in assigned areas that encompass specialty procedures e.g.: surgery, C-arm, tomograms, venograms, arthrograms, myelograms, ERCP, sialograms, video speech evaluation, hysterosalpingogram and other specialty procedures as well as GI and GU procedures; maintains acceptable exam repeat rate; assists physicians in performance of fluoroscopic and minor specialty exams by providing and administrating proper contrast media, positioning patient and operating fluoroscopic equipment; performs IV injections and has knowledge of use and care of existing IV's; identifies all images with appropriate lead markers and patient name; provides proper radiation protection for patients, self and others (uses lead aprons, lead gloves, and gonadal shielding when appropriate).

  • Participates in performance improvement projects and performs quality control testing as required by department; assists department in achieving successful results in all federal, state, and local agency audits.

  • Participates in the education/instruction of students and the orientation of new staff.

Licensure/Certification Required:

Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT); current license in the state of Ohio or Kentucky; current BLS certification.

Licensure/Certification Preferred:

Advanced Registry in Quality Management by the ARRT

Completes duties assigned by the RN or designated healthcare professional (HCP) in accordance with federal, state and local regulations witin the policies, procedures, guidelines and department-specific addendum of Mercy Health. Provides support as the cardiac monitor watcher by conscientiously viewing the central station cardiac monitor screens and reporting observations relevant to patient tracings to ensure the delivery of quality patient care. * Observes and accurately interprets cardiac monitors and reports changes in baseline rhythm patterns. * Documents patient data according to policy under direct supervision of RN/LPN or designated healthcare professional. * Provides support to RN by assisting with patient care, retrieving supplies from other departments, and delivering specimens or picking up blood supplies from the laboratory. * Provides clerical support and coordinates communication to support the function of the nursing unit. * Demonstrates exceptional interpersonal skills, including telephone, electronic, and in person. Relays clear, concise information, uses courtesy and tact in relating to patients/visitors, employees and providers and escalates issues when appropriate using established protocols and the chain of command. * Attends and participates in unit/department meetings per unit policy and participates in required programs. * Participates in quality improvement studies and projects as directed. MINIMUM EDUCATION Required Minimum Education: High School Diploma/GED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS (must be non-expired/active unless otherwise stated): Required: Current STNA certification at time of hire or two years recent experience in acute or long term care facility or nursing student with 1 semester of clinical rotation completed Preferred: Biannual renewal of STNA certification preferred but not required MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Years and Type of Experience: Preference for recent experience in acute care or long term care facility Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: CPR with BLS, Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers, obtained within 6 months of hire Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred: Computer proficiency with ability to access and input data into multiple programs Mercy Health is an equal opportunity employer.
