WXYZ 7 Action News in Detroit is looking for an experienced, aggressive, innovative Assistant News Director to lead a skilled team of journalists in covering one of America's great news markets. WXYZ and sister station WMYD air 9.5 hours of local television news each weekday, and we produce content 24/7 on digital web, mobile and social channels as well. Ideally, we're looking for an experienced manager, a true show doctor who can work to level up our day to day coverage in hands on work with our producers and reporters. This position will focus on our day to day news coverage and help us win the "big story" on-air and on-line with all of our digital platforms.

Key activities

  • Assist News Director with supervisory responsibility for all news broadcasts and online content.

  • Involved in hiring and performance management of direct reports.

  • Assist News Director in the on-going evaluation of personnel.

  • Create tactics and strategies to increase demos performance in key target areas for multiple platforms.

  • Implement and have working knowledge of federal, state and local laws impacting operations.

  • Ability to manage cross platform content creation and distribution.

  • Write copy and edit scripts for air and web.

  • Knowledge of and proficiency in posting content to station websites.

  • Schedule anchors and multi-media journalists.

  • Lead coverage planning of major events, i. e. elections, special events.

  • Proactively communicate news initiatives across departments.

  • Evaluate workflow efficiencies.

  • Assist News Director in managing the budgetary aspects of newsroom operations.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience/Certifications

  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.

  • Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office.

  • Broad understanding of newsroom operations and equipment.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast paced environment.

VIEW JOBS 11/12/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-02-10T00:00 Description Under immediate supervision of the Detroit Animal Care and Control (DACC) Director, the Assistant Director (AD) oversees and supervises all operations of DACC, including finance, procurement, facility management, human resources/labor relations, and administrative functions. The AD will ensure that administrative support services are well-coordinated, productive and in compliance with City of Detroit, State, and Federal regulations, as well as industry best practice, where applicable. The AD serves as Director's designee in the Director's absence. Examples of Duties Human Resources * Set DACC-wide strategy for Human Resources activities, in conjunction with City of Detroit HR department. * Oversee hiring, on-boarding, team member performance evaluation processes, and support disciplinary action and off-boarding procedures. * Oversee employee development and workplace trainings. * Liaise with other City of Detroit agencies to ensure strong collaborative relationships. * Develop programs to maintain positive team morale and active staff engagement. * Set and monitor defined objectives for performance, standards for evaluation and continuous feedback. * Lead continuous efforts for improvement of workplace culture, diversity and inclusion Facilities * Oversee the management of the DACC facility. * Develop and meet strategic short- and long-term goals for facility improvement, maintenance, and management functions. * Ensure positive relationships with City of Detroit General Services Department (GSD). * Formulate DHD business plans to drive excellence in facility operations. * Represent the DHD with external and internal stakeholders. * Lead negotiation of leases, contracts, and other business relationships, as required by DHD Senior Leadership. Finance * Oversee DACC's financial operations, including managing productive relationship with City of Detroit Office of Chief Financial Officer (OCFO). * Develop a draft budget and work with Senior Leadership to get the budget approved internally and with the OCFO. * Develop and meet annual procurement plans. * Develop and monitor monthly budget targets with internal team, DHD Senior Leadership, and OCFO. * Define, review and improve internal processes on an ongoing basis to achieve best practice financial management standards. * Ensure managers are trained in budget management and are meeting targets on a monthly basis. * Ensure DACC meets or exceeds standards for contracting and procurement timing performance. * Develop and monitor revenue collection processes and standards to ensure compliance with City regulations and maximization of revenue collections. Information Technology * Oversee DACC's information technology and management systems with the City's Department of Information Technology (DoIT). * Ensure appropriate use of IT resources. * Communicate effectively and in a timely manner with DoIT to ensure DACC information technology needs are met. * Develop and oversee internal information management infrastructure, in partnership with DoIT and DACC Director, and consistently with division needs. Other * Other duties assigned by the DACC Director, DHD Director, or Associate Director. Minimum Qualifications * Bachelor's degree in policy, criminology, law, administration, finance or an applied animal science related field. * Five or more years' experience managing the operations of a public agency or related entity, preferably an animal care and control department. Equivalency Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education and experience requirements of this position. Supplemental Information Completion of Emergency Preparedness training to include, but not limited to FEMA ISC 100, 200, 700 and 800 and others as required by department staff. Must be willing to become a Certified Animal Control Officer by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, having completed and submitted 100 hours of training within the first 12 months of hire. Must be willing to become certified by a Michigan State Licensed Veterinarian to perform euthanasia by injection with the first 12 months of hire. Valid State of Michigan Operator License.
