SALARY $74,708.00 - $115,967.00 Annually

EDUCATION ACCREDITATION: Applicant's education must be obtained from an accredited institution.

Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.

ELIGIBILITY: Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK: Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to this position identified as positions of trust will be required to authorize the release of and successfully complete a Fingerprint check.

PROBATION: All persons, including current City employees, selected from this position will be on probation for 6 months.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

A Chemist III assigns, reviews and gives work direction to subordinate chemists and laboratory assistants or performs chemical analyses of samples using specialized equipment. The work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Incumbents receive general supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek; some evening, weekend and holiday hours may be required.

Work is performed in a chemical laboratory where incumbents may be exposed to noxious odors, acids, organic solvents and hazardous substances. Work requires minimal physical exertion; however, there may be periods of prolonged standing.

SELECTION PROCESS

All candidates indicating the minimum qualifications on their applications will be placed on the eligible list without further examination. The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:

EDUCATION: Have a bachelor's degree in chemistry from an accredited college or university.

AND

EXPERIENCE: Have 3 years of experience in chemical analyses of water or wastewater.

OR

EQUIVALENCIES: Equivalent combination of education and experience, which must include at least 30 credits in chemistry from an accredited college or university.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES: A valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required.

NOTE: Employees in the waste laboratories must complete the required coursework to perform analyses using specialized equipment.

NOTE: Employees assigned to this class who analyze drinking water must successfully complete periodic lab certification performance tests administered by the Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of chemical analyses.

  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures.

  • Knowledge of EPA regulations concerning the handling and disposal of hazardous substances.

  • Ability to make stoichiometric computations.

  • Ability to perform and oversee specialized tests.

  • Ability to work effectively with others.

  • Ability to train new employees.

  • Ability to maintain records and write technical reports.

  • Supervisory ability.

EXAMINATION PROCESS
