WSU VISTA: Urban League Outreach Coordinator VISTA

The Urban League was recently awarded a grant to create a Family Resource Center for families in the 67214 zip code. The Urban League, serving the community since 1954 as a civil rights organization, has the mission to serve as a catalyst to change lives and strengthen their urban community.

Currently the Urban League is providing a food bank, offers first home buyers classes, a teen empowerment series, a job fair and hosts Facts Not Fear to discuss health and vaccinations. Urban League was selected as a Family Resource Center because poverty is high, access to health care is low, school attendance for teens is poor and child abuse rates where high in this area code. Since this is a new program, the Urban League needs a VISTA with wisdom, energy, and the ability to try new approaches to work with folks in poverty.

The Kansas Children's Service League will work with the staff, parents, and Board to help the Center become credentialed. The VISTA will be supervised by the Family Resource Specialist. Because this is a new program, Board members, the Director of Operations, parents, and a member of the Kansas Nonprofit Chamber will meet to plan.

Some parents will serve as a Parents Advisory Committee. There are four objectives for the VISTA at the Family Resource Center. The first objective is to introduce the Center to the community in both traditional and social media and attending community meetings on zoom or F2F to hear what parents need and what the Center is offering.

The second objective is to plan and organize resources for the families in the Center and in the community. The third objective is the management of data for the parents, Board and government. The fourth objective is to develop strategies and conduct some fundraising activities.

It is preferred that the VISTA have some college hours, and have skills in communications, computer technology, data management, fundraising, and writing. The benefit would be to learn to start a new program. Further help on this page can be found by clicking here.

Member Duties : Educate the parents and community about the FRC by developing a website for the families to know what is going on at the FRC, preparing monthly newsletters about the Center and attending community meetings, to inform the community about the FRC and gather information. Organize activities out to meet the needs of the families by establishing partnerships and referral systems to ensure service provision, developing policies and implementing the Flex Fund process.

Manage data for the Center by determining the data KCSL (Kansas Children's Service League) wants to be collected, determining different data audiences, writing a manual about how to manage data at the Center. Conduct a Fundraising Program for the FRC by soliciting donations for families for events (i.e. pizza for meetings, tickets for family outings, etc.), work with staff to write grants, developing a database of potential donors, and attending meetings, trainings and other professional development.
