Job Description
Performs routine technical and skilled work in the maintenance, repair and replacement of machinery and equipment used in sludge dewatering and fluidized bed incineration; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision.
Essential Tasks
Assists in the overhaul of sludge dewatering and incineration machinery / equipment, including centrifuges, sludge pumping systems, chemical feed systems, conveyors, etc.;
Maintains pumps, reads meters, lubricates and performs preventive maintenance;
Rebuilds pumps and piping systems, installs new equipment;
Replaces control valves;
Cleans, services and assists in the overhauls of pumps, motors and related equipment;
Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
Serves in position as relief operator on an as needed basis:
Monitors sludge handling/incineration facility to inspect process operations, including centrifuge & incinerator controls, pumps, grinders, conveyer belts, polymer blending and delivery equipment, storage tanks and hoppers. Ensures equipment is operating properly.
Records instrumental readings, both in laboratory and throughout the facility.
Makes necessary adjustments to equipment and machinery to include opening and closing valves and adjusting feed rates and polymer dosages.
Collects samples and runs laboratory analyses which includes calibrating and operating the instrumentation used in the analyses.
Monitors and operates complex computer-controlled equipment to include SCADA, PLC controlled machinery and integrated systems, and records essential data required to meet state and federal regulatory permits.
Cleans facilities, grounds, and process equipment.
Reports defects or malfunctions to proper personnel.
Operates or assists other operators with the operation of rubber tire loader with bucket or forks, manual and electric lift trucks, dump trucks, and other equipment.
Qualifications
Formal Education
Requires High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience in either manufacturing and/or maintenance of equipment.
Preferred mechanical experience specifically in water treatment, wastewater treatment,
and/or incineration.
Valid North Carolina Driver's License and ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 12 months of employment.
Must be highly detail oriented.
Must be able to climb ladders and utilize scissor lifting devices.

Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Must have physical stamina to withstand working under adverse weather conditions.

Must be able to use rubber protective gloves while installing small items such as washers, screws and fuses. Must be able to climb ladders and tolerate confined and enclosed spaces.

Environmental Conditions
The Worker is subject to Inside and Outside Environmental Conditions: Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. The worker is required to work in extremely hot weather and extremely cold weather as well as in rain, sleet, snow, ice, fog, smoke, wind and lightning storms. This may require the individual to wear the same clothing and continue work for a period of time to exceed the normal work schedule during emergencies. Worker is subject to other conditions such as pollen, creosote and other substances that may cause allergic reaction.
Employee will be exposed to grease, lubricant and petroleum products, hazardous materials and chemicals associated with a utility plant facility. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.
