Join us and help turn student aspirations into reality!
The Elizabeth J. Fallon Learning Resource Center (LRC) offers tutorial services in math and writing for all MSC students.
The Learning Resource Center (LRC) of Mat-Su College is seeking writing tutors for the upcoming academic year (fall 2024 & spring 2025). Fall semester tutors generally start in early September.
Tutor hours vary each semester and are subject to change. Hours of availability for the current semester are posted outside the LRC and on the department web site.
Writing tutors help with all aspects of writing, from reviewing grammar and helping with essay development to explaining modes, genres and research methods of academic writing. Tutors work with students in a variety of course work and at variable writing skill levels.
Although tutors can help students understand grammar and punctuation irregularities, they do not correct these for students; rather, they train students to understand principles of academic discourse and to find disparities in their own writing.
To thrive in this role, applicants must demonstrate mastery in Standard Written English (including grammar, punctuation, and paragraph/essay development) as well as mastery in academic writing skills (including writing processes, modes and genres, and reference and citing styles). Successful applicants must also possess excellent oral communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work with students from diverse populations, the ability to maintain confidentiality, and the ability to explain concepts to students of varying skill levels.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in English or a related field strongly preferred.
Experience teaching or tutoring in English/writing or another field of mastery is preferred.
