Job Description:

Madison College is seeking a Writing Center Professional Tutor to join our team in the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. In this role, you will provide structured, in-person, and online assistance to help writers develop their skills, becoming more effective, confident, and successful communicators.

As a Writing Center Professional Tutor, you will play a crucial role in increasing student retention and academic success. By helping students build awareness of their linguistic abilities and providing them with transferable skills, you will positively impact not only their current writing assignments but also their future academic and professional endeavors. You will also help shape study strategies and emphasize positive life skills essential for learning. In addition to working with students, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty on specific course curriculum activities and planning.

The Writing Center Professional Tutor reports to the Writing Center Manager.

The Writing Center offers hours of service Monday - Sunday 9:00am to 8:00pm. This part time, 25-hours a week position will work no more than 6 hours/day between the hours of service. Working hours will be discussed at time of hire.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Engage with Students in-person or online in tutoring appointments:

  • Discuss oppportunites throughout writing process where writers can further develop ideas and provide options and strategies to maximize writer's success.

  • Motivate and encourage learners through individual and group engagement experiences.

  • Adapt to individual student learning styles and guide students using suitable approaches and techniques.

  • Approach sessions with curiosity about students' linguistic assets and cultural backgrounds

  • Build students' language awareness and writer agency

  • Promote and Support Writing Center:

  • Participate in marketing of the Writing Center.

  • Actively participate in education about and professional development in composition and writing center concepts, trends, etc.

  • Attend and represent the Writing Center at professional conferences and events

  • Attend all staff meetings and professional development sessions.

  • Support Students with Additional Services Related to Tutoring:

  • Inform students of traditional and online resources and services that can supplement or enhance learning

  • Conduct individual and small group writing sessions in the classroom, virtually, or in the writing center on topics that correlate with classroom studies.

  • Provide Mentoring and Training

  • Assist in the development and presentation of training programs for peer tutors, support staff, instructors, student workers.

  • Be a resource, assist in mentoring and supporting peer tutors.

  • Maintains a commitment to the college mission, vision, and values.

  • Other duties as defined by department, college, or officials.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Skill in communicating effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated skill in communications and human relations with populations of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and persons with disabilities.

  • Knowledge of writing center, asset-based, and learner-centered teaching pedagogies.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of student learning styles and tutoring strategies.

  • Ability to plan and organize work responsibilities in an effective and timely manner to meet the needs of students.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with team members in an ever-changing demanding environment.

  • General knowledge and use of academic technologies, devices and formats.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Composition, Journalism, or field where written communication was an expected competency.

  • Two (2) years of combined experience in teaching, coaching, advising, tutoring, or another avenue of support the growth and development of others.

  • Although not a requirment, interest in ESL & TESOL certifications are preferred.
