The Research Assistant will assist me on various projects, many film related, such as:

  • Research into the careers of film directors such as Harry Beaumont, Clarence Brown, Frank Borzage, Jean Negulesco, Vincent Sherman, and Robert Aldrich. Actresses such as Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Greer Garson. Figures such as Adrian, Irene, Cedric Gibbons, Billy Haines, George Folsey, Charles Lang, Jerry Wald. The histories of MGM, Warner Brothers, Republic Pictures, and Columbia Pictures.

  • Research on "Sword and Sandal" films of the 1950s and '60s. This research traces developments in the history of cinema and engages major cultural, political, and philosophical preoccupations of the postwar period, including: discourses on the relationship between antiquity and modernity, changing conceptions of labor and social justice, transformations in the nature of religious faith and the role of the spectator in the encounter with both history and myth.

  • The student will assist on the completion of a book manuscript, dealing with post-WWII American architecture, film, and philosophy, which is currently under review at a university press. The book explores the conflicted legacy of modern architecture in America, particularly its relationship to changing democratic ideals and transformations in mass culture in the 1950s and 60s. It places architecture within the contexts of art, film, and philosophy, and engages discourses on beauty, democracy, humanism, monumentality, and the fate of culture in the postwar world.

  • The student will also, on a weekly basis, assist in make photocopies and other preparation such as the creation of powerpoints for class.
