Words and Pictures Grant Coordinator

The Words and Pictures Grant Coordinator will report directly to the Curator of Education. This position is part-time (20 hours per week) and is currently funded for 2 years The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University was recently awarded a $75,000 grant from the NEA to implement an innovative art and language arts program for Kindergarten, first and second grade students and teachers in Durham Pubic Schools (DPS). The project includes recruiting classroom and art teachers from up to six DPS schools to work for 40 hours during the summer of 2012 to create arts-infused language arts lessons for grades K, 1 and 2. In Fall 2012, the lessons will begin to be implemented in classroom and at the Nasher Museum. School groups will visit the Nasher Museum 2 or 6 times over the course of the year. Teachers and Nasher Staff will meet regularly over the academic year to reflect on the lessons and refine them for the future. In the summer of 2013, a website designer will be hired to create a website to share the lessons and images. The project will continue on a larger scale in the 2013-2014 academic year.

The Coordinator will be responsible for tracking and monitoring all aspects of the grant. Duties will include, but are not limited to:

#Schedule, attend, and record meetings between DPS teachers and Nasher Museum staff (20+ people per meeting)

#Communicate effectively and often with DPS teachers, administrators and parents to secure permissions, schedule field trips, check on progress and share findings

#Observe and document school groups in the classroom andin the Nasher Museum (will need to be able to travel to various DPS schools)

#Coordinate with evaluation consultant to gather and analyze data for grant reports

#Keep Nasher Education staff and DPS teachers on long-term and short-term schedules

#Act as the liaison with the website designer. Will act as the main point-person to gather and manage website content.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Candidates should have excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to act professionally and diplomatically with diverse constituencies.

  • Requires excellent attention to detail, and familiarity with professional office procedures and protocol

  • Ability to handle many tasks simultaneously in a busy office, and superb organizational skills required

  • Flexibility and reliability to multi-task and meet deadlines; strong ability to prioritize

  • Fluency in Spanish highly desirable

  • Valid NC driver's license

Departmental preferences:

  • B.A., degree in arts, education, or humanities
  • 1-2 years experience in a related field, museum experience preferred

The Nasher Teen Council is a more dedicated group of students who meet every two weeks and connect deeply with the museum through time with staff, interactions with local artists, time in the galleries, and time spent making art. The Nasher Teens is now a broader offering of monthly workshops that allow for a larger number of teen students to participate in museum programs. The Teen Program Educator will be responsible for all aspects of the Nasher Teen Council. The Teen Program Educator will also work closely with the Educator for K-12 and Family Programs on the planning and execution of the Nasher Teen workshops. Primary duties will include, but are not limited to: * Design an annual project-based program for the Nasher Teen Council * Promote the Nasher Teen Council program to all Durham Public Schools high schools and other areas high schools as appropriate * Manage the application process for Nasher Teen Council members * Schedule, attend, and record Nasher Teen Council meetings * Communicate effectively and often with Nasher Teen Council members and parents, as well as partner schools and administrators * Coordinate evaluation of Nasher Teen Council to gather and analyze data for museum planning, as well as reporting to individual donors and grant organizations * Coordinate programs with localartists, Nasher staff, and other guest participants * Work with the Educator for K-12 and Family Programs on general Nasher Teen programs Administrative duties will include, but are not limited to: * Perform all administrative duties for Nasher Teen Council * Assist in creating and managing the budget for Nasher Teen Council * Participate in donor proposals and conversations for program-related funding * Work with PR department to promote program through the website, e-newsletter, social media, and printed materials.
