Summary of Position: Assumes responsibility for performing clerical, surgical scrub and other non-nursing duties under the supervision of Director and/or designee, thus enabling the professional staff to devote more time to direct patient care.# Demonstrates a commitment to a team approach as evidenced by a supportive, positive attitude and communication pattern.# Works collaboratively with other members of the healthcare team.

Primary Job Responsibilities: Surgical Assistance: Performs duties of surgical assistant as directed by departmental manager under the supervision of circulating nurse in an emergency situation.# Performs gowning, gloving and draping techniques according to department policy; maintains a clean and orderly work area when performing the scrub role.# Hands surgical instrument and supplies to the surgeon and the assistant intraoperative so that the surgical team#s attention remains on the operative field, and anticipates the needs of the surgical team throughout the surgical procedure.# Demonstrate knowledge of proper function of the surgical implementation.


Operations:


Sets up delivery table for laboring patients according to physician/midwife specifications, breaks down table after delivery; cleans and restocks carts as needed.# Obtains and checks necessary supplies, instruments and equipment needed to meet both patient and surgeon intraoperative needs, ensuring availability and function.# Completes room turnover between cases, and restocking surgical supplies at the end of the shift.


Clerical Support:


Reports the location of drains, implants, grafts, etc inserted intraoperative; ensures that the circulator has all necessary information for documentation on the OR record.# Maintains patient medical records within the department.# Stamps, assemble and breaks down medical records as needed, copies records for transport, adds laboratory reports.# Maintains Delivery Room Register, Register of Births, Census Book.# Assures accurate completion of the Birth Certificate paperwork, Acknowledgement of Paternity paperwork and Regional Prenatal Data System (RPDS) workbook as per the NYS Department of Health guidelines.# Acts as a liaison with physician offices to schedule patients for testing, procedures, cesarean sections, etc.# Monitors the daily surgical schedule to anticipate needs for cases throughout the day. Compliance: Demonstrates understanding/adheres to hospital and department policies and procedures and AORN Standards as assigned.

Demonstrates the knowledge and ability to maintain a safe environment for the newborn and the women of childbearing age. Follows identification procedure, Code Orange policy and Infant security policy. Applies knowledge of surgical asepsis when arranging and opening sterile surgical packs, instruments, trays and selected supplies; monitors maintenance of aseptic technique of the surgical team both preoperatively and intraoperative.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma.# Active LPN OR has successfully completed a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization OR has completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Arm, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps OR provides evidence of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year; occurring within the four years immediately prior to January 1, 2015. Salary Range: $23.76 - $39.01 Pay Grade: 27 Compensation may vary based upon, but not limited to: overall experience and qualifications, shift, and location.
