About the Role:

Aquila is seeking a Windows Systems Engineer to join our team in supporting one of the country's premier defense research organizations. The facility maintains a significant population of Microsoft Windows end-point systems. These enterprise systems are managed by the facility's Information Services Department (ISD) which oversees all aspects of the system lifecycle including new system image creation and delivery, systems management including OS patching, security and systems agent management, and advanced troubleshooting and application patching. The team is in need of a senior Windows systems engineer to help create, deploy, and manage solutions to oversee these systems in meeting organization operation and security/compliance needs.

There are a few requirements for the position:

  • Must be a U.S Citizen (Green Cards / Visas do not qualify)
  • Willingness to undergo a comprehensive background investigation and maintain a personal security clearance. (Aquila would sponsor you for the security clearance.)

What You'll Do:

This position will report to the facility's End-Point Engineering Team as part of ISD. The goals of this position will be the successful execution of projects and operational work as needed. All managed systems will be required to meet NIST 800-171 security compliance and operational processes and controls for these systems will be designed to meet the Laboratory's audit requirements in accordance with Cybersecurity Maturing Model Compliance (CMMC).

The successful candidate will be expected to work across other IT teams to address operational, project, and compliance tasks as necessary. In addition to the technical skills necessary for completing the work, this position will require strong organizational, project management, and communication skills to help implement and manage change. An understanding of security controls based on NIST 800-171 will be important and previous experience in working in a security compliance environment is a plus.

The current platform configuration requires extensive knowledge and support of Windows 11, systems management platforms including HCL BigFix and Microsoft ECM and scripting technologies including Microsoft PowerShell, Python, VBScript, and Batch, and knowledge of Windows image creation and delivery including device driver injection. In addition, the position will demand senior-level experience with troubleshooting and vulnerability remediation including the creation of scriptable solutions

Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To:

  • Solution Development-

  • Participate in technical projects including the collection of business / functional requirements, solution design, and deployment, pilot and testing, collection of feedback, creation of solution documentation, communicating and deploying solutions effectively to the customer base

  • Communicate and report status to project supervisors and stakeholders. Work expected to follow project-management best practices and demonstrate effective skills in creating artifacts appropriate to a variety of audiences including training and end-user guidance.

  • Communicate and educate Lab staff on new features, and project status via written and/or presentations as required

  • Systems Administration-

  • Manage all systems management platforms systems to ensure normal operational status. Includes working with peer IT teams from network, cyber, and platforms as well as enterprise monitoring and system auditing to facilitate issue resolution.

  • Work with Lab security team(s) to ensure security compliance and risk/vulnerability management best practices associated with identity and authentication systems including maintaining operational and configuration documentation and ensuring identity systems are audit-ready.

  • Triage incoming technical issues to ensure timely return-to-service for customers while documenting knowledge to help address similar issues

  • Build and deploy fixlets to address technical issues or needs utilizing appropriate scripting or configuration tools

  • Oversee and execute system upgrades and new feature deployment as required including adherence to all ITIL-best practices and communications to Lab staff

  • Provide status updates and operational metrics, and KPIs to the Leadership team as necessary

  • Participate in ITSM best practices by the organization including change, release, and incident management

  • Supports 3rd tier incident escalations and ticket assignments

  • 5 years of SCCM, and Active Directory

  • 5 years of Strong Backup Experience and Proven Ability to Protect Mission Critical Data

  • 5 years of System Administration

  • 5 years of Technologies including DNS, DHCP, Proxy, and Load Balancing

  • 5 years of Windows Patch Management

  • 5 years of Windows Server Platform

Working Knowledge of the Following:

  • Security compliance and operational processes

Location: Remote

On-Call Rotation Schedule: On-call for one week/24/7, every 8 weeks.

Work Schedule: This position is REMOTE. The candidate is able to work remotely from any location. They may be asked to take up to 2 trips per calendar year to Lexington, Massachusetts if the program/project requires it. HIGHLY PREFERRED that this individual can work EST hours.
