Wind Resource Modeling and Characterization Researcher

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory is seeking an atmospheric scientist with extensive experience in wind energy meteorology, machine learning (ML), and uncertainty quantification (UQ). The candidate will work across different projects within the Department of Energy-funded initiatives as well as externally funded work. Research focus areas will include wind resource characterization, wind plant performance modelling and prediction, and remote sensing measurements and analysis. Previous experience in planning and executing atmospheric measurement field campaigns will be an advantage.
This scientist is expected to demonstrate a broad understanding and wide application of atmospheric principles, theories and concepts, as well as best practices for application of ML and UQ for wind energy applications. The scientist will be involved in strategic development of the wind resource characterization program and work with a wide variety of customers including industry partners and the DOE energy technology.
The successful candidate will have excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills. The candidate will be expected to publish results
in high impact technical journals and present work at conferences, symposia, and review meetings. Finally, the candidate will be expected to support the development of new work proposals, preparations, and reviews.
PhD in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Environmental Engineering, or related field.
Or, Master's Degree in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Environmental Engineering, or related field and 3 or more years of relevant research experience.
Or, Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Environmental Engineering, or related field and 5 or more years of relevant research experience.
Additional Required Qualifications
Expertise in the field of wind energy meteorology
Expertise in the application of ML and UQ to wind energy meteorology
Experience in processing and analyzing observed and modeled atmospheric data, including data from meteorological towers, remote sensing instrumentation, reanalysis products, and mesoscale models
Expertise in a Linux-based high-performance computing environment
Proficiency in Python scripting languages
Proficiency in GitHub for collaborative software development
Experience working within or in collaboration with the wind energy industry
Track record of publications in high impact factor journals
