Candidates are sought for the position of Laboratory Manager at the Montana State University Campus of the WIMU Regional Program in Veterinary Medicine.Montana State University (MSU), the University of Idaho (UI) and Utah State University (USU) are partners with Washington State University (WSU) in its Regional Program in Veterinary Medical Education to serve the states of Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Utah. This innovative and highly successful program, known as the Washington-Idaho-Montana-Utah (WIMU) Regional Program.

The WIMU regional program serves students with interests in all facets of the veterinary profession, whether they are interested in companion animals, horses or livestock, in private practice, industry or academia, or whether they are unsure. The opportunities available for DVM education in the WIMU regional program prepares graduates for entry into any of the exciting dimensions of veterinary medicine. Up to ten Montana students will spend their first year in Bozeman at Montana State University. MSU faculty members teach the 1st year curriculum which includes Anatomy, Histology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Immunology, General Pathology, Professionalism and Ethics, Introduction to Clinics, and Introduction to Surgery.

Duties and Responsibilities

Manage WIMU laboratory. Duties include but are not limited to maintaining inventory of supplies needed for instructional labs (Histology, Neurology, Anatomy and Pathology).
Specimen preparation, prosecution of embalmed specimens, gross cadavers' acquisition, and osteology bone preparation.
Coordinate with course instructors on a regular basis to facilitate adequate supplies and setup for laboratory periods.
Ensure laboratory compliance with university policies.
Build relationships with area clinics and shelters for acquisition of cadaver specimens through donation.
Supplies will be ordered as needed for undergraduate anatomy lab at MSU.
Additional duties outlined below:

General Ordering of Laboratory Supplies:

Dog cadavers
Bovine eyes
Sheep Brains
Pig or sheep hearts
Goats, horse, and calf
Gloves, scalpel blades
Disinfectant, hand soap and cleaning supplies
Chemicals and bone bleaching supplies
Aprons, Tyvek suits
Media for formaldehyde scrubber

Anatomy Laboratory Duties:

Setup for lab, including cadavers and instruments
Tag preparation for exams
Operating power tools to aid in opening the pelvis and thoracic cavity
Wash towels and lab coats
Sweep and scrub floors, wipe down counters
Deep cleaning of downdraft tables
Prepare 2 phenoxyethanol, mold control and disinfectant solutions
Organization and inventory of cold room cadavers and tissues
Feeding and maintenance of beetle colonies
Skeleton and bone osteological specimen preparation and maintenance
Bagging and disposal of cadaver waste. (Coordinated through At Home on the Range)

Pathology Laboratory Duties:

Pickup and storage of donated necropsy animals from local veterinary clinics
Organization and inventory of animal histories
Organize and inventory of freezer specimens
Organize and inventory of cold room specimens
Thaw animals prior to necropsy labs
Sharpen necropsy knives
Setup for lab
Printing of case histories for pathology slide sets. (as needed)
Collection, fixation, cutting in tissues, processing, cutting sections and staining slides

General Laboratory Duties:

Update chemical hygiene plan as needed
Updated material safety data sheets as needed
Ensure weekly and monthly eye wash and fire extinguisher maintenance
Ensure compliance with formaldehyde testing and records
Complete routine self-inspections of the lab
Change scrubber media in cold room as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Bachelors Degree in related field OR equivalent in a related field.
Comfortable with working routinely with live and deceased animals of various post-mortem states.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Masters, or advanced training in related field.
Experience working in educational / research settings.
Experience demonstrating a proven track record of independently managing tasks and responsibilities.
Knowledge of regional veterinary clinics and shelters.
