Description & Details:

We are looking for a motivated individual to assist in evaluating plant, avian, and pollinator communities in mixed-grass prairie managed with cattle through virtual fencing technology. This individual will become an integral part of a community of technicians and graduate students dedicated to investigating conservation practices that can improve biodiversity in working landscapes. By obtaining this position, the individual will be exposed to numerous research methods and experiences that can improve their eligibility for future employment or studies in the field of natural resource management. Start and end dates are flexible and can be discussed during interviews.

Primary duties will include:

  • Data collection on plant community structure and composition

  • Line-transect distance sampling of grassland birds

  • Plant-pollinator surveys and passive pollinator sampling methods (e.g., bee bowls)

In addition to primary data collection, individuals can expect to be tasked with data entry and assisting with other projects at the Research Centers.

Work Schedule:

  • Up to 40 hours/week

Advertised Pay:

  • $14/hour

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Some undergraduate education

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a degree in Natural Resource Management or related field

  • Prior field work experience, especially related to mixed-grass prairie

  • An interest in Range Ecology, Ornithology, or Entomology

  • Working knowledge of plant/avian identification

  • Willingness to work in adverse conditions (terrain, weather, ticks, mosquitoes, etc.)

  • Ability to walk long distances over rough terrain

  • Willingness to learn field survey techniques

  • Detail oriented and tolerant of repetitive work

  • Experience working independently and as part of a team

  • Comfortable living in a group setting

  • Experience with data management software (e.g. Microsoft Excel)

  • Valid driver's license
