Job Description and Duties

Are you excited to be part of a dynamic and diverse team working to manage and restore habitat for wildlife in Northern California? The Department of Fish and Wildlife is seeking a motivated individual to work as the Wildlife Habitat Supervisor in the Bay Delta Region.

This includes wildlife and habitat management, restoration and enhancement activities assisting our team region-wide.The job will include regular field work conducting habitat management on CDFW Un-Staffed Lands, including approximately 54,000 acres within BDR. Duties include:

Working as a field-based lead staff to perform challenging activities that benefit Wildlife and DFW properties. Helping to conduct seasonal wildlife surveys and hunting programs.

The position will lead and assist with habitat management, wildfire resiliency and fuel reduction projects, and facility and equipment operations and maintenance projects. Duties will include: maintaining infrastructure, equipment, and vehicles; implementing habitat projects; working hunter check stations; posting signs; vegetation management for wildfire resilience; and interacting with the public. The incumbent will also work with and lead a Wildlife Habitat Assistant and numerous Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aids.

Working Conditions

The position will sometimes work long days or irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends. Field activities may involve strenuous physical activity in variable weather conditions.

Conditions often include extreme heat, cold, rain; steep or uneven terrain in remote settings; dust; and fumes and/or chemicals. Work using equipment and machinery, operating foot controls and performing repetitive foot movement, and exposure to excessive noise. Use of a computer keyboard in a sitting and/or standing position several hours a day.

Use of physical strength and agility to perform physical tasks involving kneeling, crawling, twisting, sitting, walking, climbing, standing, bending, and twisting from the neck and waist; repetitive hand/arm use includes simple and power gripping, pushing, pulling, fine manipulation, and reaching above and below shoulder level; and carrying/lifting up to 40 pounds. Must feel comfortable with close contact and handling of wildlife or handling carcasses, and interacting professionally with regional and HQ staff, and members of the public via e-mail, telephone, and in person meetings, in compliance with best practices. Possession of valid driver's license required and must be able to operate a motor vehicle, often 4-wheel drive, and equipment and be prepared to travel using a State vehicle. This is a full-time, permanent position.The reporting office is designated as the Fairfield Headquarters, but may be an alternative location (e.g., Napa field office or Santa Rosa field office) based on institutional need.
