Position Summary

This position is part of the wildlife team within Rusk and Taylor Counties carrying out all phases of responsibility for the wildlife program, and assists other teams with multi-disciplinary activities and integrated projects. The position responsibilities include: participating in program planning, budgeting and oversight for projects in the Ladysmith sub-area; planning and directing management activities on 12,000 acres of seven state owned wildlife areas; establishing integrated wildlife goals and providing technical forest wildlife habitat management information and guidance to the Rusk and Taylor County Forests and USFS Chequamegon-Nicollet National Forest to encourage program integration and consistency in management direction and strategies; administering federal, state, and privately funded habitat management programs and directing associated development and maintenance activities; collecting and evaluating wildlife population and habitat survey data, coordinating a wildlife damage and nuisance control program; implementing a public relations and education program to schools, organization and private individuals; and leading and directing the work of wildlife technicians, Limited Term Employment (LTE) staff and volunteers in the accomplishment of all tasks.

Salary Information

The classification of this position is Wildlife Biologist - Senior, which is in schedule-range 15-03 with a starting salary of $65,228-$71,344 annually, based on qualifications. This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. A 12-month probationary period may be required. Pay for state employees will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

Job Details

The DNR does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility Form I-9 upon hire.

The DNR conducts criminal background checks on final applicants prior to job offer. Applicant must be eligible to drive a state vehicle by meeting the following criteria:

  • Have a valid driver's license

  • Be at least 18 years of age

  • Have a minimum of two years of licensed driving experience

  • Have not had three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years

  • Be free from any OWI/DUI violations within the past year

Must be able to occasionally work nights and weekends, based on business needs.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified candidates will have each of the following:

  • Education, training and/or experience performing wildlife population management or habitat management.

  • Experience preparing reports and communications utilizing computer software programs.

In addition, highly qualified candidates will have one or more of the following:

  • Experience leading a team or the work of others, such as team building, motivating, training/coaching/mentoring, providing constructive feedback, etc.

  • Experience giving media interviews and/or making public presentations.

  • Experience planning, tracking and/or monitoring work goals/accomplishments.
