The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist 4 located in Palmer!

What you will be doing:

This supervisory position is responsible for the oversight of the wildlife research program and staff in Region IV (Central/Southwestern Alaska). The position involves developing and ensuring a scientific basis for the regional wildlife management program, including developing, improving, or discarding management techniques for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data used to make management decisions and regulatory recommendations to the Alaska Board of Game which includes intensive management activities. This position is responsible for determination of project and spending priorities; supervision of research and associated staff; assurance of scientific quality and integrity of research efforts and publications; management of the research program budget; and coordination of inter-regional and inter-agency research projects.

This position offers a challenging and fulfilling, professional opportunity to conduct and coordinate research projects on a diversity of wildlife resources in a region that stretches from the Canadian border through the Aleutian chain. This position will work directly with management and research biologists and may develop projects with federal, tribal, university, and other collaborators. As a research coordinator you may be involved in research in remote areas of the state; answering research questions pertaining to wildlife nutrition, predator prey dynamics, and habitat use among others.

The working environment you can expect:

This position is based in Palmer, in southcentral Alaska and oversees the activities of three research biologists, a wildlife physiologist, and a biometrician. Daily work environment spans from research planning, development, and coordination, to preparing budgets and managing fiscal obligations, program and personnel supervision, indirect supervision of facilities containing captive animals and a nutrition laboratory, report writing, data analysis, manuscript preparation, and conducting your own research.

We are looking for an energetic and committed professional who has experience:

• Planning, developing, and coordinating research on the ecological relationships between wildlife species, their habitats, and human interactions.

• Providing professional program supervision including assisting principal investigators and other staff biologists, preparing reports to Federal Aid coordinators, assisting in the preparation of manuscripts, and other materials for professional meetings.

• Preparing budgets, managing fiscal obligations, and pursuing grants.

• Supervising and evaluating professional research biologists, including reviewing progress on assignments, evaluating personnel, recruiting, and hiring personnel, and assisting in field work.

• Directing and implementing research as a Principal Investigator with a focus on wildlife populations and habitat ecology.

Must be able to obtain/maintain the below listed certifications upon being hired:

• Peace Officer certification (AS 16.05.150, 16.05.160);
• Wildlife chemical immobilization certification (Controlled Substances Act; US Code Title 21 CFR 1300);
• Wildlife capture and handling certification (Animal Welfare Act; Title 7, chapter 54, section 2131-2157; CFR Title 9, chapter 1).

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management;

AND

One year of advanced professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 3, Wildlife Biologist 3, Habitat Biologist 3, or Fisheries Geneticist 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

Special Note:

"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
