WSU students who help other students navigate course content and college success. Peer Assistants (PAs) provide both in classroom and out of classroom support by assisting faculty in facilitating classroom activities, providing one-on-one and group tutoring sessions, and providing general communication support.
The position may require flexible weekday, weekend, and evening hours as needed. PAs may be placed in courses to facilitate study groups, mentor their peers, and offer additional one-on-one meetings to discuss everything from how to study effectively to how to get referrals to campus and community resources. PAs may facilitate group activities and workshops with staff prior to enrollment for incoming Wildcat Scholars. PAs will assist with developing communication messages to students and assist with responding to student inquiries and needs.
Required Qualifications
Must be enrolled at WSU with a minimum of 6 credits
Must have completed at least one semester at WSU
Earned a grade of "B" or higher in the assigned course
Have a prior semester WSU GPA of 2.7 or better
WSU faculty or staff member reference (include a name of a faculty or staff member in your application to be contacted as a reference)
Available for 8-15 hours weekly during fall and spring semester, and for the maximum weekly student employment (20 hours/week) during training and special event dates
Attend all required trainings that may occur prior to the semester
Attend all required meetings or professional training during the week or weekends and school breaks
Good appreciation for working with diverse populations
Ability to make connections with first generation students and their families
Strong communication skills
Strong work ethic, initiative, ability to work independently
Ability to work in groups and value collaboration
Maintain confidentiality and exercise extreme diligence with confidential information and materials
Enjoy talking about the program and course subjects
Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff and students
Excellent interpersonal skills with a positive attitude
Preferred Qualifications
Bi-lingual Spanish/English
Prior experience teaching, tutoring, or mentoring
Strong organizational skills
Knowledgeable of (or able to obtain information about) student relevant dates and policies such as add/drop dates, financial aid, academic standing, etc.
Knowledgeable of other student support services that Wildcat Scholar students can access (training will be provided to supplement existing knowledge of WSU resources)
