Summary:
This position is responsible for welding together metal components for standard and custom precision-engineered and fabricated vacuum chambers and systems using TIG and MMA techniques by performing the following duties:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Read blueprints and drawings and take or read measurements to plan layout and procedures.
Determine the appropriate welding equipment or method based on requirements.
Set-up components for welding according to specifications (e.g., cut material with powered saws to match measurements)
Operate angle grinders to prepare the parts that must be welded.
Align components using calipers, rulers etc. and clamp pieces.
Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal, or overhead)
Repair machinery and other components by welding pieces and filling gaps
Test and inspect welded surfaces and structure to discover flaws.
Experience using a variety of welding equipment and procedures (TIG, MMA etc.)
Experience in using electrical or manual tools (saws, squares, calipers etc.)
Ability to read and interpret technical documents and drawings.
Knowledge of Industrial OSHA regulations and willingness to use protective clothing (face-shield, gloves etc.) and can maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety.
Perform quality checks to ensure accuracy of own work and others when required.
Participate in cross functional teams to address and resolve manufacturing, design, and quality problems, and to ensure the continuous improvement of processes and methods.
Proficiently leak test chambers using helium leak test equipment.
Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun.
Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse, as specified by Welding Engineer or Welding Technician. Starts power supply to produce electric current.
Strikes (forms) arc which generate heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and join edges of work piece.
Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.
Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions. Examines welding for bead size and other specifications. Applies filler rod manually to supply weld metal.
Cleans or degreases welded joint or work piece. Repairs broken or cracked parts and fills holes. Prepares broken parts for welding by grooving or scarfing surfaces.
Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
Preheats work piece with hand torch or heating furnace. Positions and clamps work pieces together or assembles them in jig or fixture, tacks assemblies together.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience: Two-year welding certificate from an accredited college or technical school; or six to twelve months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Successful completion of a relevant apprenticeship program is required.
Language Skills: Ability to read, comprehend and write simple instructions, short correspondence, memos and have the ability to effectively present to other employees and customers in English.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Able to accurately measure with a tape measure and square to 1/32" and convert decimals to fractions.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills: Basic knowledge of computers desired to log in and navigate to access job folders to view sales quotes if necessary to retrieve paint specifications, as needed.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Professional Certification (e.g., an AWS welding certificate) will be a plus.
Other Qualifications: Proven, skilled experience with welding and strong attention to detail. Ability to distinguish stainless steel, carbon steel and aluminum and read blueprints and schematics. Highly motivated, self-starter, capable of working independently as well as in a team setting. Must be mechanically inclined and willing work overtime on an as-needed basis to maintain production deadlines.
