Job Description / Essential Elements: Print

DEFINITION:

Receives general supervision from the Welder-Fabricator Supervisor to perform skilled machinist and welding work in the repairing, designing, machining, assembling, welding and fabrication of metal parts, tools, machines, playground, classroom and maintenance equipment; to perform general all purpose metal working tasks; perform related duties as required. May exercise technical guidance over less experienced workers.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below (E). This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification but is intended to accurately reflect the principle job elements.)

Fabricates, assembles and repairs District equipment, including: Basketball and soccer goals, baseball backstops, gates and fences, ornamental iron, metal structures, bleachers, handrails, metal doors and window frames, screens, lockers, metal ramps, pad locks and chains, roll up doors, custodian carts, children's equipment, cafeteria tables, restroom partitions, playground equipment, kitchen equipment, stainless steel materials, vehicle repairs, sheet metal work, signs, pipes, lawn mowers and other District equipment. (E)

Welds metal materials together as specified by layout, sketches, blue prints work orders or verbal instructions using mig, arc, tig and acetylene welding processes. (E)

Uses electric and gas welding equipment, drill presses, metal brakes, metal shears, lathes, grinders, and a large assortment of other power and hand tools and measurement instruments required for journey level metal work. (E)

Develops and prepares sketches and specifications for tools, parts or equipment to be fabricated or machined. (E)

Performs repair work in the field as well as in the shop. (E)

Plans sequence of operations. (E)

Ability to set up scaffolding, use ladders and extension ladders, operate man lifts, boom trucks and fork lifts. (E)

May be required to respond to emergency calls.

Maintain inventory of stock and records of time spent and work performed. (E)

Maintain regular and prompt attendance in the work place. (E)

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Various metals and their characteristics and methods of cutting and shaping them.

  • Operation, maintenance, and repair of small and large metal working tools and equipment.

ABILITY TO:

  • Design metal work specifications.

  • Read graphical representations of work to be done.

  • Repair a variety of small tools and equipment.

  • Follow oral and written instructions and to work from plans and specifications.

  • Physical capability sufficient to perform job tasks.

  • Keep records of work performed.

  • Work with a variety of metals, plastics, poli-mar, por rock, plaster, caulking materials and carpentry fasteners.

  • May overhaul transmissions on garden and custodial tools and equipment.

  • Manufacture and repair equipment and tools.

  • Read and write at the level required for successful performance on the job.

  • Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

  • Carry out oral and written directions; write and speak at a level sufficient to fulfill the duties to be performed for the position described.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to one year journey level metal work experience that involved the welding, fabricating, assembling and general repairing of equipment.

License or Certificate

Possession of a valid California driver's license is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT:

Indoor and outdoor work environment.

Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors.

As required must wear protective devices such as earplugs, dust mask, coveralls, gloves, safety boots and safety glasses.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Employee in this position must have/be able to:

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of trade tools.

  • Walk and/or stand for extended periods of time.

  • See with/without assistive devices sufficient to perform assigned duties.

  • Lift and/or carry up to 40 lbs for short distances.

  • Occasionally lift and/or carry up to 100 lbs for short distances.

  • Occasionally lift up to 80 lbs overhead.

  • Push/pull up to 100 lbs. for short distances.

  • Sufficient body movement and balance to bend at the waist, kneel, crawl, crouch and stoop.

  • Reach overhead, above and below the shoulders and horizontally.

  • See, hear and speak with/without assistive devices sufficient to communicate effectively with others.

Exposure to gas, smoke and fumes.
