About This Position:

The primary purpose of this position is to independently perform specialized welding and/or cutting operations to bridges, facilities and equipment.  Examples of job duties are:

Performs at the level of an advanced journeyman, skilled in the use of acetylene, electric arc, wire feed welding, plasma and Acetylene, cutting of stainless steel, aluminum and non-ferrous materials.   Possesses mastered skills in the layout, fitting, and fabrication of various metal components. Incumbent will be responsible for repairs to equipment, (i.e. drill rigs, trucks, trailer, wreckers, a-frames, mowers, excavators, tractors, etc.) and incumbent will modify and/or fabricate steel structures and appurtenance, such as, but not limited to:

 Bridges, Buildings, Doors, Sheds, and Roof Supports. The position requires the lifting of 50 pounds and involves night time operations or call outs for emergencies. May be required to perform other duties as necessary, including but not limited to, emergency / disaster support activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Three years of experience in the welding trade.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Training in the welding trade will substitute for a maximum of two years of the required experience on a month for month basis.

Completion of a Technical Diploma or Associate of Applied Science welding program from a Louisiana Technical or Community College or equivalent program from other institutions will substitute for two years of the required experience.

NOTE:

The Technical Diploma and Associate of Applied Science welding programs offered by Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS) schools consist of 45-75 credit hours of coursework.  Certificate of Technical Studies (CTS) and Technical Competency Area (TCA) credentials offered by LCTCS schools are not equivalent programs and will be credited under the first substitution.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Code certification in accordance with API Standard 1104 or ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code may be required.Function of Work:

To independently perform specialized welding or cutting operations on materials, tools, and equipment. To supervise subordinate welders on project basis.

Level of Work:

Advanced.

Supervision Received:

General from a foreman or superintendent.

Supervision Exercised:

Functional over subordinate helpers, welders, apprentices, etc.

Location of Work:

May be used by all state agencies.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from Welder by performance of complex, difficult, and specialized assignments (i.e. aluminum, non-ferrous, stainless steel).

Differs from Welder Foreman by lack of responsibility for assigning and inspecting work in addition to instructing subordinates.Performs specialized welding the areas of aluminum, non-ferrous, and stainless steel.

Requisition materials.

Preheats and cleans metal.

Lays out, cuts, and fits materials for welding.

Welds machinery and equipment.

Perform as cutting and welding operations on structural steel.

Brazes various non-ferrous and ferrous metals.

Inspects brushes and grinds welds.

Sharpens and tempers tools and does general repair work on graders and other road equipment. Directs and trains helpers.

Fabricates, designs, and lays out welded objects.

Perform as all duties of a Welder.

Performs code certified welding on high pressure lines in accordance with API Standard 1104 or ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.

Represents, on a statewide basis, the Department of Transportation Marine Maintenance Unit to render assistance to Marine Equipment in preventive maintenance, equipment inspection, and maintenance programs and in the supervision of shipyard repairs.

Conducts on-site preventive maintenance and safety inspections of light and heavy marine equipment, writes reports on equipment condition, and recommends corrective action.

Assist in conducting Coast Guard Inspections and Department of Transportation and Development pre-inspections of Marine Vessels. Discusses the needs for various types of marine equipment with Supervisors and others; makes recommendations for specifications for purchase of equipment including revising and updating current specifications.

Maintains inventory on marine equipment showing location, physical history, and current mechanical condition.
