About the Position
The Weed & Pest Control Specialist performs skilled specialized work independently and as part of a team involving herbicides, larvicides, traps, and other pesticides to control insects, rodents, weeds, and other unwanted vegetation on Flood Control District properties, structures, and rights-of-way.

We Require
One year of experience applying pesticides and/or herbicides
High school diploma or GED
A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis
We Also Value
Experience calculating areas, volumes, and diluting pesticides for proper pesticide application rates
Skill in safely and efficiently operating various hand and power tools, equipment, and vehicles
Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and state and local laws about pesticide applications, pesticide toxicity, chemical formulations, and baits
Knowledge of occupational hazards associated with pest control and the physical characteristics, feeding habits, and life cycle of pests
Job Contributions
Assure chemicals are properly and safely handled, applied, stored, and disposed, in accordance with applicable Federal and State laws, to ensure public and applicator safety
Operate a County vehicle and travel throughout the County using application equipment, trucks, four-wheel drive, application delivery systems, shovels, weed eaters, etc.
Apply herbicides to Flood Control District's rights-of-way, structures, and properties according to established schedules
Assist in the calibration of various Ecology chemical applications equipment
Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in a field setting; may be exposed to outdoor climate conditions that are sometimes wet, unsanitary, and hot
Must possess or have the ability to obtain, by the time of hire, a valid Arizona driver's license
Must possess (or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire) from the Department of Agriculture Pest Management Division certifications in Right-of-Way within three (3) months of hire and must obtain certification in Industrial & Institutional and Aquatic within (6) months of hire
Must maintain a minimum of twelve certified educational units in pesticide-related training yearly. Six are required by the Department of Agriculture's Pest Management Division, and six more are due to recent modifications to environmental regulations and advancements in pest control technology
Travel using County issued vehicle is required
Must be able to work the following schedule: Monday - Thursday, 5:00am to 3:30pm
