The Web Graphics Designer/Developer ensures the administrative computer systems effectively support the business objectives of Virginia State University.

Position Objective/Purpose of Position:

Provide technical support in the development of the VSU website in collaboration with VSU constituents and third-party vendors, design and develop brand strategies, performing web application programming and content management, web data analysis, and training.

70% - Provide technical assistance and support to the Web Services team with the Web Content Management system (Cascade

Server), University's website, social media sites, and mobile devices and properties. Design and implement web pages and

other web solutions for the University's web and mobile properties. Maintain and update University websites with content

and dynamic features. Regularly fix and/or eliminate site issues and/or problems. Be proactive in preventing site problems.

Handle multiple web programming projects and be involved in planning, executing, and monitoring/controlling, and closing

projects. Proactively and effectively communicate project status and issues to peers and management.

15% - Aid in the preparation of detail technical specifications and instructions. Reviews the work of junior project team

members to ensure compliance with standards/specifications and other guidelines. Develop a high-level system, functional

specifications, test cases, and test results. Test and validate University web applications by developing unit test scripts,

interpreting results, and make recommendations. Take part in developing effective reporting tools for the business

departments to monitor web traffic on its sites. Help Web Services management analyze the website activities and trends and

compare analysis against the services, standards, and best practices.

10% - Assist in developing training materials on the content management system, user documentation, including user manuals,

reference manuals, and handouts. Conduct training sessions on the content management system. Assist in preparing and

publishing FAQ pages, help files, newsletter articles, and other sources of information.

5% - Other duties as assigned by the CIO, Deputy CIO, and/or Web Services Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Web Designer/Graphics, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Considerable experience using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and/or Fireworks

  • Competence with PHP and doing development on a Linux operating system.

  • Experience using any modern Content Management System such as Drupal, Joomla, Wordpress and Cascade Server, in particular.

  • Considerable experience in JAVA, JavaScript, HTML, XHTML, CSS, and/or other web development tools.

  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, vendors, and the public.

Additional Considerations:

PREFERRED:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Web Designer/Graphics.

  • Prior experience working in a higher education environment.
