This position is based in beautiful Port Orchard, Washington and oversees the management and deliverance of pharmaceutical care for our four nursing homes serving Veterans in Port Orchard, Orting, Walla Walla, and Spokane. Please Note: The shift for this position is 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Incumbent must be available any time from 5:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday with occasional after-hours coverage. Incumbent is also required to adjust hours to meet program and agency demands and may work excessive hours on occasion. In-state travel may be required, on occasion, to travel for training, meetings, and conferences.

  • This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step L. Step M has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules.

Position(s) at this location will also receive 5% Premium Pay for facilities open twenty four hours per day. Employees must physically work at the facility 3 days per workweek to qualify. The 5% Premium Pay is in effect until June 29th, 2025.

In addition, we provide critical community services through a variety of programs, and at our four State Veterans Homes located in Orting, Port Orchard, Spokane, and Walla Walla. These locations provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to Veterans, including, in some instances, their spouses, widows, or Gold Star Families.

As the Pharmacy Manager, you will ensure that the pharmacy program for all four nursing homes meets state and federal rules and regulations while assuring the program is operated in accordance with professional pharmacy practices.

Some of what you will enjoy doing:

  • Supervising the entire spectrum of pharmaceutical services in each of the nursing homes.

  • Managing the Pharmacy Biennial operating budget of approximately $3.2 million.

  • Ensuring that pharmacy staff comply with all laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to the practice of pharmacy.

  • Consulting pharmacy staff for each of the homes and providing pharmaceutical services evaluations and recommendations to staff.

  • Conducting on-site reviews at each of the homes to ensure that drug handling and utilization procedures are carried out in accordance with recognized standards of practice.

  • Regularly reviewing each resident's therapy to screen for potential or existing drug therapy problems and documenting recommendations.

  • Administering all Medicare Part-D contracts.

  • Directing, developing, implementing, and coordinating pharmacy information systems, departmental safety, and record management programs in accordance with agency policy and state and federal statutes and regulations.

Required:

  • Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (APCE) Graduate
  • Must hold a baccalaureate or doctorate degree in pharmacy from a school, college, or pharmacy accredited by the APCE.
  • Maintain a current and valid license to practice pharmacy in Washington State.

  • Four (4) years of pharmacy experience in a leadership role.

  • Mastery of pharmacist knowledge and skills, including dispensing, consultation, drug/drug, drug/disease state interaction, contraindications, and allergy checks.

  • Knowledge of establishment and management of emergency drug and supplemental dose kits and other systems in support of the homes' pharmaceutical needs.

  • Knowledge of all state and federal regulations related to the practice of pharmacy.

  • Knowledge of all state and federal regulations related to the use of medications in skilled nursing/long-term care facilities.

  • Ability to manage all operational aspects of multiple pharmacy service locations.

  • Mastery of principles of supervision, training and staff development including the professional staff.

  • Strong technical knowledge of budgeting practices and purchasing, including the ability to identify and act on opportunities in contract/vendor efficiency and/or saving.

  • Ability to manage vendor/contractor contracts to meet departmental and agency needs.

Preferred/Desired:

  • Experience in consulting in a long-term care setting.

  • Geriatric pharmacy experience.

  • Experience working with the federal Veterans Affairs system.

  • Must maintain a valid pharmacist license from the Washington State Department of Health.

  • Requires use of personal protective equipment as required by the Washington Industrial Safety & Act Standards for pharmacy operations and to perform pharmacy tasks. Must be able to wear a respirator, medical gloves, gowns, eye protection, and other personal protection as required by a job or task.

  • Must comply with health screening requirements by undergoing a tuberculosis skin test.

  • Positions requiring travel must have a valid unrestricted driver's license and must be insured if driving a privately owned vehicle on state business.
