  • Permanent, at the historic Washington Soldiers Home in Orting, Washington!
  • Wages reflect pay increase effective July 1st, 2024*

Please Note: The schedule for this position will be 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

  • This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step L. Step M has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules.

Position(s) at this location will also receive 5% Premium Pay for facilities open twenty four hours per day. Employees must physically work at the facility 3 days per workweek to qualify. The 5% Premium Pay is in effect until June 29th, 2025.

These locations provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to Veterans, including, in some instances, their spouses, widows, or Gold Star Families.

As a Maintenance Mechanic 2, you will support the engineers, electrician, and other maintenance mechanics on the Washington Soldiers Home campus. You will also repair plumbing, building structure, plant infrastructure, grounds equipment, mechanical assemblies, and other equipment.

Your experience will be critical in enhancing the safety and operations of our facility, while providing comfort to our residents. If this sounds like the right opportunity for you, then we encourage you to join our team by applying now!  Some of what you will be doing:

  • Repairs toilets, drains, faucets, and plumbing across campus.

  • Supports engineers with repair or installation of domestic water, condensate and steam valves, piping and traps.

  • Monitors fire protection and environmental control equipment to ensure that building systems and equipment are operating in a satisfactory condition.

  • Responds to service requests and secures necessary assistance.

  • Takes preventive and emergency action to control malfunctions.

  • Operates vehicles, hand tools, power tools and other shop equipment.

  • Performs welding and metal fabrication; fabricates machined equipment parts and operates metal press as necessary.

  • Assists in remodels and building projects in accordance with project requirements.

  • Positions may lead or supervise lower level staff, residents or offenders.

Required:

  • Four years of experience as a plumber or millwright/mechanic at a journey level with demonstrated abilities in problem solving, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, welding, fabrication, machining, controls and carpentry skill sets.

  • Must be able to troubleshoot and repair, using each of the mentioned skill areas.

Preferred/Desired:

  • Ability to use appropriate tools.

  • Ability to read, understand, follow and enforce safety procedures.

  • Ability to diagnose and repair structures to maintain usability.

  • Ability to read commercial blueprints and apply building codes through the full range of commercial and industrial maintenance and construction work.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be able to pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check prior to beginning services and every two (2) years in accordance with WDVA Policy 615.000 Background Checks. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.

  • Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.000 Tuberculosis Testing.

  • Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by the Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards. Must be able to wear a respirator, medical gloves, gowns, eye protection, and other personal protection as required by a job or task.

  • Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. and be capable of reaching a minimum of 36" using proper technique to stock shelves and access supplies.

  • Positions requiring travel must have a valid unrestricted driver's license and must be insured if driving a privately owned vehicle on state business.

  • Candidates who are offered a job with WDVA must possess work authorization which does not require sponsorship by the employer for a visa now or in the future.
