Looking for an opportunity to employ both your leadership and food service worker skills while serving at a Veteran-focused nursing facility dedicated to "Serving Those Who Served?" This position is for you! Our team is hiring for two (2) part-time Food Service Worker Leads at the Washington Veterans Home in scenic Port Orchard, Washington!

Please Note: The expected hours for this position are 11:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sundays and Mondays and 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Incumbent may be required to work overtime. Position requires flexibility and ability to work in ambiguous circumstances due to significant variability in the workday priorities. Occasional travel requires to attend training and meetings at other locations.

  • These positions have been posted within the assigned pay range through Step L. Step M has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules.

Position(s) at this location will also receive 5% Premium Pay for facilities open twenty four hours per day. Employees must physically work at the facility 3 days per workweek to qualify. The 5% Premium Pay is in effect until June 29th, 2025.

These locations provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to Veterans, including, in some instances, their spouses, widows, or Gold Star Families.

As a Food Service Worker Lead, you will serve in a supervisory position in the satellite meal service areas of the Washington Veterans Home. You will also ensure that food is distributed in a safe and sanitary manner to ensure the nutritional needs of the residents at the Washington Veterans Home are met and maintain a safe working environment and ensure sanitary procedures and cleaning duties are followed by staff.

  • Serving as the lead employee in food service duties in assigned area, including guiding and checking the work of other food service workers and monitoring for safe food handling practices.

  • Accomplishing duties related to the service of food to residents, staff, and other authorized personnel, to include:

  • Portioning and dishing up foods for service in the cafeteria or on the serving line following portions specified on serving guides and recipes.

  • Serving hot and cold foods on the cafeteria line or the serving line using therapeutic diet principles and monitoring food for safe serving temperatures.

  • Serving as lead employee in food preparation, cleaning, and sanitation duties in assigned area, including directing and checking the work of other food service workers.

  • Performing a variety of food preparation duties following specific sanitation principles.

  • Serving as lead employee in food delivery duties in assigned area.

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Current, valid Washington State Food Handler's Permit (from https://www.foodworkercard.wa.gov).

  • Must have:

  • Lead worker experience.

  • Dependability, teamwork, and communication skills.

  • Ability to:

  • Make simple arithmetic calculations.

  • Work productively with staff and residents from diverse backgrounds.

  • Follow policies and procedures.

  • Maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.

Preferred/Desired:

  • Degree or certificate in culinary arts.

  • ServSafe certified.

  • One (1) year of experience in a lead supervisory role in a food service setting.

  • One (1) year of experience working with geriatric population and/or in a healthcare  institutional setting.

  • One (1) year of experience working with residents with dementia/Alzheimer's diagnosis

  • Knowledge of therapeutic diet planning, preparation, and serving of special diets, and sanitary methods of food handling.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines in a time-sensitive environment.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be able to pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check prior to beginning services and every two (2) years in accordance with WDVA Policy 615.000 Background Checks. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.

  • Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.000 Tuberculosis Testing.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and color vision.

  • Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by the Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards. Must be able to wear a respirator, medical gloves, gowns, eye protection, and other personal protection as required by a job or task.

  • Must be able to walk, sit, and bend in an unrestricted manner on a consistent basis during the entire workday. Employee must have the physical ability to do required work, including lift/carry/push/pull frequently up to 40 lbs. and occasionally up to 60 lbs. and reach items up to 74" in an unrestricted manner on a consistent basis throughout the workday.

  • Must be able to read and understand written instructions, directions, and procedures in English and learn all current and modified therapeutic diets.

  • Positions requiring travel must have a valid unrestricted driver's license and must be insured if driving a privately owned vehicle on state business.

  • Candidates who are offered a job with WDVA must possess work authorization which does not require sponsorship by the employer for a visa now or in the future.
