WATER/WASTEWATER TREATMENT ENGINEER

The Starship Engineering team is looking for an individual to design, build, and operate a water and wastewater treatment system for the Starship development site in Brownsville, TX. This site is a self-sustaining facility with production, test, and launch operations as well as living quarters and entertainment amenities for the Starship team members. This is the gateway to Mars!

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, build, and commission water and wastewater treatment system for Boca Chica site

  • Coordinate with launch site leadership to prioritize immediate needs and longer-term development

  • Work with spaceport team to fulfill a wide range of water needs, including irrigation, bathrooms, housing, and kitchens

  • Work with launch team to fulfill water leads for testing and launching Starship

  • Development of design criteria, perform engineering and analysis, and specify and procure equipment for the design of a site-wide water and wastewater system - including desalination systems.

  • Support of construction projects with internal and external labor

  • Work closely with facility teams to ensure system design is well-understood and easy to operate long term

  • Work with automation and controls team to monitor, control, and automate the system

  • Establish chemical treatment and evaluation process

  • Task and project management

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, chemical, civil, environmental or aerospace engineering
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience working with water/wastewater systems in a professional setting

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's degree in mechanical, chemical, civil, environmental or aerospace engineering

  • 5+ years of experience delivering wastewater, water, and water resource solutions for a municipality or resort

  • Demonstrated expertise designing and operating systems from conception through full operation

  • CAD capability for 3D modeling (e.g. NX, SolidWorks)

  • Experience operating and troubleshooting control systems required for remote and automated operations

  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team of talented and driven engineers

  • Licensed professional engineer (PE) is desired

  • Strong analytical, conceptual, communication and organizational skills

  • Passion for advancing the commercial space industry and human spaceflight

  • Able to work well in an integrated collaborative team environment including daily interactions with technicians, engineers, and managers

  • Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure, fast paced environment

  • Self-motivated and directed with keen attention to detail

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed

  • Willing to travel to our launch sites in support of build out activities and launches; travel requirement is up to 15%

An employee in this class is responsible for the operation of pumps and other equipment, taking samples of wastewater flow, reading plant meters, and maintaining the buildings and ground of wastewater treatment plants. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures under the direct supervision of a senior operator. Work is reviewed through inspection and by observing the effectiveness of plant operation through the analysis of shift reports and chemical laboratory tests. Job Responsibilities * Attends training courses and engages in independent study of wastewater plant operations; takes readings and performs a variety of tests on raw and partially treated sewage and final treated effluent; pumps sludge at prescribed levels; checks digester. * Makes operational checks on equipment at the wastewater plant and lift stations; checks and adjusts float controls, starter switches, pumps and motors; keeps all equipment clean, lubricated and painted; removes grease deposits, debris and sand from wet wells; drains and cleans equipment; changes chlorine cylinders as needed and checks supply. * Takes samples of wastewater flow and assists in their analysis. * Takes samples of potable water for coliform and other analysis. * Keeps records and makes shift reports. * Performs related work as required. * May be required to perform shift work as needed (evening/weekends). Minimum Qualifications * High school graduate or GED or any equivalent combination of education and experience. * Possession of a class "C" or higher wastewater certificate as issued by the State of Texas. * Possession of a class "C" or higher surface water certificate issued by the State of Texas. * Some knowledge of the functions and servicing of mechanical equipment and machinery. * Must know the process involved in the treatment of raw sewage, including some chemical tests. * Ability to inspect machinery and mechanical equipment and to detect flaws and defects in operations. * Ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of shift operations. * Ability to understand and follow both written and oral instructions. Additional Requirements * Valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's License. * Must possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). * Selected candidate must pass a pre-employment drug screening and background investigation to be hired for this position. Preferred Qualifications * Bilingual (English / Spanish).
