The purpose of this position is to maintain and repair City buildings and machinery to include water plants for utility services, water pumping stations, and water tanks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs preventative maintenance of water plants and remote sites.

  • Repairs and installs new parts and equipment as needed.

  • Performs building maintenance as needed.

  • Maintains pump stations, water tanks and vaults on a monthly basis to ensure the quality of water for customers.

  • Performs inventories and orders parts as needed for the upkeep of sites and facilities.

Supplemental Functions:

  • Performs other similar duties as required.

Job Specifications and Qualifications:

Knowledge:

  • Carpentry principles and practices

  • Plumbing principles and practices

  • Electrical principles and practices

  • Applicable local, state and federal laws, rules, and regulations

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License;

  • Ability to obtain Confined Space Certification. Failure to obtain within six (6) months of hire may result in termination.

  • Ability to obtain Forklift Operator License. Failure to obtain within six (6) months of hire may result in termination.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Positions assigned to Water Plants:

  • Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking.

  • Heavy Work: Exerting 50-100 pounds occasionally, 25 -50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.

  • Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, physical hazards.

Positions assigned to Wastewater Plants:

  • Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling,kneeling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking.

  • Heavy Work: Exerting 50-100 pounds occasionally, 25 -50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.

  • Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, physical hazards.

  • Applying local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations

  • Using applicable tools of the trade

  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Required Experience

High school diploma or equivalency and at least six-months of advanced study, with at least one (1) year of relevant experience; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
