POSITION: Waters Intern for Liturgy

REPORTS TO: Director, University Ministry

HOURS NEEDED PER WEEK: 10

HOURLY RATE (OR RANGE): $15.00

DATES OF EMPLOYMENT (APPROXIMATE): August 12, 2024-May 2, 2025

EXPECTATIONS FOR ALL DOMINICAN EMPLOYEES: To support the University's mission of preparing students to pursue truth, to give compassionate service, and to participate in the creation of a more just and humane world.

JOB COMPONENTS//PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work collaboratively with other University Ministry interns and fellows (Beloved Community, Faith for Change, Ministry en lo Cotidiano, and Waters Interns) to help shape the environment of the University Ministry Center and its programs in ways that reflect hospitality and contemplation, including but not limited to ways that involve your presence, care for the physical space, and design and execution of programs.

  • Provide leadership and coordination over the following liturgical areas of focus: Sacristans, Acolytes, Art & Environment, & Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, and Hospitality working collaboratively with University staff and Liturgical Ministers. Duties include volunteer recruitment, orientation, ongoing formation, prayer writing, and weekly communication for liturgical ministers.

  • Responsible for keeping Rosary Chapel and sacristy and other designated sacred spaces in good order, clear of clutter, clean, and well-stocked to ensure prayerful liturgies and reverent, sacred spaces. Tasks include but are not limited to: cleaning the holy water font, replacing candles, ironing or steaming of altar linens or decorative fabric, cleaning Eucharistic vessels, organizing liturgical music or hymnals, moving chairs, watering plants, decorating for liturgical seasons, etc.

  • Help to maintain supply storage closets, keeping a weekly inventory of communion hosts, liturgical wine, altar candles, ambo candles, and other liturgical supplies necessary for the celebration of Mass.

  • Responsible for keeping music closet, file cabinets and shelves in good order. Tasks include but are not limited to: making copies, hole-punching copies, filling binders, filing music not in use, organizing music shelf & hymnals, moving chairs, setting up microphones, preparing lector book, creating worship aids, etc.

  • Plan to be present and engaged at each of the Sunday and Candlelight Masses, socials after Mass and other prayer moments (rosary, adoration etc).

  • Actively engage in ministry and outreach.

  • Help to coordinate and initiate comprehensive marketing and promotion efforts of the department.

  • Design and create content for print and digital publishing in a way that speaks strongly to the values of University Ministry.

  • Design, create, and manage content for social media (Facebook and Instagram) and engageDU in a way that communicates clearly the values of University Ministry.

  • Strategize creative ways to communicate with and reach the campus community to invite diverse student participation in University Ministry sponsored activities.

  • Attend weekly team meetings and staff meetings as required.

  • Attend weekly Theological Reflection led by staff members and consisting of other University Ministry Interns.

  • Assist with university wide collaborations as assigned.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be enrolled as a Dominican University student at least part-time in a degree-seeking program

  • Must be eligible for US employment

  • Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of the practice of Catholic sacraments.

  • Trained as a Sacristan, Eucharistic Minister, and Lector within the Roman Catholic tradition a plus.

  • Strong computer skills, especially with Microsoft Office and Canva

  • Comfortable working in sacred spaces.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and organizational abilities.

  • Enjoys organizing as well as creating prayerful environments.

  • Demonstrated skills for hospitality, building community, public speaking, engaging peers, and shaping environments conducive for reflection.

  • Actively engage in ministry and outreach. Through hospitality, tabling and other events, build relationships and foster an environment of inclusivity and welcome on campus. Interns will be responsible for regularly engaging with other community members to listen, create opportunities for connection and facilitate belonging across campus activities.

  • A "self-starter," willing to take initiative, work independently, and be dependable.

  • Demonstrated commitment to the work of University Ministry and desire to share in the mission and goals of the department.
