Job Summary This is skilled work in the operation of wastewater treatment plant equipment and facilities. An employee in this class is responsible for the operation of pumps and other equipment, taking samples of wastewater flow, reading plant meters, and maintaining the buildings and ground of wastewater treatment plants. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures under the direct supervision of a senior operator. Work is reviewed through inspection and by observing the effectiveness of plant operation through the analysis of shift reports and chemical laboratory tests. Job Responsibilities

  • Attends training courses and engages in independent study of wastewater plant operations; takes readings and performs a variety of tests on raw and partially treated sewage and final treated effluent; pumps sludge at prescribed levels; checks digester.

  • Makes operational checks on equipment at the wastewater plant and lift stations; checks and adjusts float controls, starter switches, pumps and motors; keeps all equipment clean, lubricated and painted; removes grease deposits, debris and sand from wet wells; drains and cleans equipment; changes chlorine cylinders as needed and checks supply.

  • Takes samples of wastewater flow and assists in their analysis.

  • Takes samples of potable water for coliform and other analysis.

  • Keeps records and makes shift reports.

  • Performs related work as required.

  • May be required to perform shift work as needed (evening/weekends).

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Possession of a class "C" or higher wastewater certificate as issued by the State of Texas.

  • Possession of a class "C" or higher surface water certificate issued by the State of Texas.

  • Some knowledge of the functions and servicing of mechanical equipment and machinery.

  • Must know the process involved in the treatment of raw sewage, including some chemical tests.

  • Ability to inspect machinery and mechanical equipment and to detect flaws and defects in operations.

  • Ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of shift operations.

  • Ability to understand and follow both written and oral instructions.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

  • Must possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).

  • Selected candidate must pass a pre-employment drug screening and background investigation to be hired for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual (English / Spanish).

  • Frequent exposure to outside weather conditions such as heat, cold, dust, and vehicle exhaust.

  • Medium physical effort including long periods of standing, up to 8 continuous hours and occasional lifting of objects up to 50 lbs.

  • Withstand prolonged periods of standing, walking, and/or sitting.

  • Frequent climbing and descending of stairs.

The Transit Operator operates a transit bus on specified fixed and paratransit routes with prescribed time schedules. COMPETENCIES: * Safety Acumen * Self-Leadership * Customer Service * Communication * Self-Awareness * Flexible * Critical Thinking * Trust * Responsible * Ethical ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & JOB SPECIFICATIONS: * Safely operates a public transit bus in all types of weather, traffic, emergency situations or conditions.The job may include morning, evening, weekend, holiday, split, or other work schedules. * Thoroughly inspects and performs pre-trip and post-trip daily on bus and equipment inspections; reporting all bus mechanical defects, needed repairs, and body damage upon daily inspection. * Comply with all State and local traffic laws; Departmental policies, safety rules, and procedures. * Report hazardous and dangerous conditions along bus routes, at passenger stops, vandalism, and graffiti in buses or bus stops, including incidents/accidents immediately. * Drives bus safely adhering to time schedules and not deviating or making stops without proper authorization. * Provides friendly customer service, information about public transit schedules, routes, fares, and other City services using tact and diplomacy, communicating professionally and responsibly. * Provides passenger assistance as needed. * Checks for proper passenger identification cards to ensure that appropriate fares are deposited into the farebox system. * Operates wheelchair lift/ramp and assists passengers as needed in boarding and alighting in a safe manner * Announce points of interest and major street intersections. * Operates a two-way radio or other communication devices. * Maintains interior of a transit bus in a clean and neat appearance. * Performs other related work as required. MINIMUM EDUCATION: * Requires High School diploma or GED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: * Requires a minimum of 6 months of work related experience. SPECIAL CERTIFICATION AND LICENSES: * Class B Commercial Driver's License with passenger endorsement and satisfactory motor vehicle record. * Medical Certificate (FMCSA). PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: Ability to exert up to 35-50 lbs. of force occasionally or a negligible amount of energy frequently to lift, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Duties are usually perform seated while driving a vehicle. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking. Working time may require irregular hours and shift times.
