The Water Technician position performs duties in the operation and maintenance of the water infrastructure system. It also performs a vital service for the community by working with a crew repairing water mains and maintaining and replacing valves, hydrants, and meters throughout the City. The technician may also assist with operating and maintaining water pumping stations and water storage tanks.

The starting salary for this position is $25.75 to $29.66 per hour depending on experience and qualifications. Further increases to the top of the range, $32.88 to $37.89, will be based on performance. This position is able to be filled at the I or II level depending on experience and qualifications.

Work Schedule:

Monday through Friday: 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with paid lunch.

Some required overtime; mainly during the winter season.

Essential Functions

The following responsibilities are normal for the position but shall not be construed as exclusive or inclusive. Other related duties may be required and assigned.

  • Work as part of a maintenance crew or independently in the construction, repair, and maintenance of the water distribution system.

  • Operate a wide variety of large municipal vehicles and other water construction/maintenance equipment which may include: leak locating devices, magnetic locators, line locators, valve maintenance machine, air compressors, rock drills, cut-off saws, snow plow, pumps, generators, front end loader, and various hand tools.

  • Report, repair and replace defective water mains, water service laterals, water valves, valve boxes, and fire hydrants.

  • Flush water distribution system.

  • Assist with Diggers Hotline locates as needed.

  • Install, read, and replace water meters; check for cross connections.

  • Submit reports of work activity and update water utility records as needed.

  • Investigate customer complaints.

  • Ability to respond to emergency situations that require working nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Perform heavy manual labor or semi-skilled labor outdoors regardless of weather.

  • Ability to safely perform confined space entry and trench excavation work.

  • Other public works functions as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • A valid Wisconsin Driver's License.

  • Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) must be obtained within one month of hire and the Class B CDL must be obtained within six months of hire.

  • Must possess the physical stamina necessary to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, and outdoors in variable weather conditions.

  • Ability to report for emergency overtime assignments as required.

  • Lift, carry and move up to 80 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 25 pounds consistently.

  • Basic computer and math skills.

  • Must have adequate mechanical abilities or aptitude.

Preferred Requirements

  • Wisconsin Class B CDL strongly preferred at time of hire.

  • Two years' experience in the performance of heavy manual or semi-skilled tasks and operation of heavy or medium duty trucks.

  • Prior experience in trade work (such as carpentry, plumbing or electrical).

  • Prior work experience for a Water Utility.

  • Elementary knowledge of plumbing installations, pipes, and piping material preferred.

  • Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Operator Certification in Distribution.

Additional Information

Receive supervision from the Water Supervisors, Water Superintendent, or other authorized personnel.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arm, climb to perform work in manholes or pits. The employee is frequently required to bend, squat, stoop or perform work in tight places or a confined space. The employee must consistently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, 50 pounds frequently and 80 pounds occasionally. Specific vision abilities required by this job include near vision, far vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employees must be able to work long consecutive hours as required by the nature of the emergency. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
