Schedule: Various Shifts:

o Monday

  • Friday; 7:00 a.m.

  • 3:30 p.m.

o Monday

  • Thursday; 7:00 a.m.

  • 5:30 p.m.

o Tuesday

  • Friday; 7:00 a.m.

  • 5:30 p.m.

This is semi-skilled manual labor in the construction, maintenance, and repair of Utilities Water Distribution, Sewer Collection and Reclaimed Distribution system. Water & Sewer Operations workers install, repair, and maintain utility lines and pipes including laying to proper grade, joining pipe and working in varying depths of excavation.

Water & Sewer Operations Worker Trainee (Starting rate of pay: $18.00/hr)

Essential Job Functions (For both positions)

  • Assist crew members in installing, repairing and maintaining of utility lines including laying to proper grade, joining pipe, repair fire hydrants and working in various depths of excavation.

  • Performs utilities line spotting, locating and referencing.

  • Installs, repairs, and maintains utility lines and pipes including laying to proper grade, joining pipe and working in varying depths of excavation.

  • Assists in constructing, repairing, and maintaining manholes.

  • Assists in setting up well-point systems for de-watering construction and maintenance sites; erects and dismantles wood and sheet steel shoring.

  • Assists in performing electrical control system maintenance.

  • Sets up and operates pumps, air compressors, generators and related equipment.

  • Performs preventative maintenance on water and wastewater treatment facilities.

  • Performs routine opening, closing and repairs to system valves and hydrants.

  • Operates pumps and air compressors.

  • Restores work sites by laying sod, back filling holes; occasionally performs incidental maintenance and landscaping duties.

  • Performs related work as assigned or required.

Position Specific Requirements

  • Completion of the ninth school grade.

Highly Desirable

  • High School diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED).

  • At least 3 months of utility construction experience.

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver's License upon hire with eligibility based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report.

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Class A Commercial Driver's Permit within 9 months of employment or employment may be terminated.

  • Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.

Water & Sewer Operations Worker (Starting rate of pay: $18.50/hr)

Position Specific Requirements

  • Completion of the ninth school grade and at least 1 year of public utility in-ground line, pipe, or meter experience; or

  • An equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.

Highly Desirable

  • High School diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED).

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver's License upon hire with eligibility based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report.

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Class A Commercial Driver's License within 9 months of employment or employment may be terminated. Eligibility is based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report.

  • Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (For both positions)

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods and possession of sufficient physical strength and agility to perform such labor, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

  • Knowledge of tools, methods and materials utilized in the repair of public utilities collection and transmission systems.

  • Ability to recognize safety hazards in work and take precautionary methods to protect self and others.

  • Ability to operate, upkeep and perform minor repair work on pumps, air compressors, generators and related machinery.

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods and possession of sufficient physical strength and agility to perform such labor, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

Physical/Mental Demands

The work is sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

  • Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.

  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.

  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.

  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.

  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.

  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

  • Visual ability: Sufficient to effectively operate office equipment including copier, computer, etc.; and to read and write reports, correspondence, instructions, etc.

  • Hearing ability: Sufficient to hold a conversation with other individuals both in person and over a telephone; and to hear recording on transcription device.

  • Speaking ability: Sufficient to communicate effectively with other individuals in person and over a telephone.

  • Mental acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.

  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.

  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.

  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
