Water Safety Instructor (Part-Time/Seasonal)

Job Summary

This position is responsible for instructing swimming classes and water safety classes to the community including swim team and adapted aquatics. The Water Safety Instructor also performs duties as a lifeguard by safeguarding pool patrons through the enforcement rules and regulations to prevent injuries or loss of life through unsafe practices in and around the aquatic center.Administers first aid and CPR as needed.Reports to an Aquatic Site Supervisor.

NOTE: This is a part-time seasonal position for the Parks & Recreation Summer Camp program which will run from June 11th - August 09th, 2024.

Minimum Qualifications

• Teach swimming lessons and water safety programs according to general guidelines provided by the supervisor and in accordance with the American Red Cross.

• Plans and organizes swim class teaching outlines, methods and goals that support community needs and the general teaching outlines provided by the American Red Cross.

• Monitors the use of the swimming pools; enforce safety rules, maintain order and discipline among swimmers and other persons at the Aquatic Center and/or related facilities.

• Conducts pool rescues in accordance with established procedures; administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation and/or first aid when needed.

• Completes and submits records and documentation of completed lessons to the supervisor and/or designee.

• Assists in front desk duties which include program registration, rentals, admissions, swim meets and collecting payments.

• Responds to public inquiries about aquatics programs made by telephone, correspondence, or during public meetings.

• Establishes positive professional relations with supervisors, co-workers and the general public.

• Assists in the maintenance of the swimming pool, monitor and maintains pool filtration system, monitor pool water chemistry through testing of water samples, adjusts chemistry as needed to maintain standards.

• Assisting in other routine activities relating to pool operations, facility maintenance and city events such as summer camps, special events, etc.

• Assist the supervisor and Head Lifeguard in carrying out pool procedures.

• Rotate among various facilities and perform other duties as assigned by a supervisor.

Position Requirements/Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED

• Must possess American Red Cross Lifeguard certification with CPR/First Aid/AED.

• Must possess American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification.

• Ability to read documents in English such as pool operations manual, City of Miramar Procedures Manual and Pool Operations Code for Swimming Pools.

• Ability to communicate in clear, concise language, both orally in writing.

• Ability to understand, apply and enforce facility rules and regulations.

• Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends and holidays.

• Must successfully pass a swim test.

• Must successfully pass a level 2 background screening.
