Introduction

The Department of Parks and Recreation has 8 aquatic facilities to include: 2 indoor pools, 4 community pools and 2 waterparks. The aquatics department serves over 400,000 visitors a year.

We offer a number of aquatic programming options, with nearly 7,000 participants per year. Team DPR is looking to hire new Water Safety Instructors for our indoor pool at Chinn Aquatic & Fitness Center, apply now!

The Chinn Aquatics & Fitness Center is currently using the American Red Cross learn-to-swim program curriculum. Aquatic programming is scheduled at various times throughout the morning, mid-day, evening and weekends requiring candidates to have a flexible work schedule.

Position Requirements:

  • Applicants must be of age 16 and up to be considered for this position.

  • This position requires a minimum education of 8th grade or higher.

  • Applicant must possess a valid American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification.

The Department of Parks and Recreation conducts DMV records checks on all employees driving for work purposes and criminal background checks on all hires age 18 years and older.

NATURE OF WORK

This class is part of the Recreation Job Family. Incumbents performs routine work in connection with various recreation programs or activities.

Instructors in this classification teach beginner and intermediate aquatic classes. Example; preschool, learn to swim, private swim, lifeguard training courses etc. May provide daily upkeep and light maintenance of equipment and facility.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable code of conduct rules; providing customer services. Work is performed in accordance with set procedures and guidelines, and deviation from those guidelines require approval.

TYPICAL CLASS RESPONSIBILITIES (These responsibilities are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

1.Carrying out program plans, activities, and lessons. Sets up equipment or materials needed for a class and cleans up after program.

2.Provides excellence in customer service by answering questions and providing information to the public.

3.Maintains and prepares equipment and facility and maintains related records.

4.Enforces pool rules; provides emergency care and treatment as required.

5.Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

8th grade education and 0-12 months of related experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be at least 16 years old; Water Safety Instructor Certification required; May require Federal or State background check.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: May require exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, and intense noises.
