JOB SUMMARY:

Under minimal supervision, the Water Safety Instructor (WSI) is responsible for the health and safety of all class participants, ensuring that class equipment is ready and available for use, lesson plans are filled out, and ensuring all hazards are removed before the beginning of their class.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensures the safety of class participants, prepares daily lesson plans, and participate in practice teaches.

  • Responsible for skills assessments of class participants to ensure participants are placed in the appropriate levels.

  • Responsible for conversing with parents about their child's performance and suggest areas of improvement with their skills.

  • Responsible for being friendly, helpful, and cheerful to all pool patrons and fellow employees in the performance of duties.

  • Respects and follows the "chain of command", attends all mandatory in-service training(s) and maintains emotional control under stress.

  • Maintains an acceptable appearance at all times, with regard to required apparel and personal hygiene.

  • Responsible for maintaining confidentiality and maintaining emotional control under stress.

  • Demonstrates patience and flexibility in changing job demands and when interacting with employees, visitors, and the public.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to adapt to different teaching methods to assist participants in learning new skills.

  • Ability to be dependable, courteous, and neat.

  • Skill in good communication, public relations and interpersonal skills.

  • Must have excellent leadership, organizational and communicative skills.

  • Must have excellent oral and written skills.

  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activities to include, running, kneeling, bending, twisting, dragging, pushing, pulling and lifting up to 50 lbs. of various recreational and athletic equipment.

  • Ability to talk, see, hear, and read, to work in adverse environmental conditions.

  • Ability to maintain an effective and pleasant working relationship with citizens, the general public, employees, and volunteers.

  • Must have the ability to work various hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays as required.

  • Must have the ability to have regular and consistent attendance and to report to work promptly.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Must be at least 16 years of age, and must be mentally and physically fit. Must be a certified American Red Cross Instructor (WSI). Prior competitive swimming experience is desired but not required. Must have a genuine interest in teaching swimming and all water activities and maintain regular and consistent attendance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

To perform the essential functions of the job, must be able to perform strenuous physical activities to include, running, kneeling, bending, twisting, dragging, pushing, pulling and lifting up to 50 lbs. of various recreational and athletic equipment, and be able to talk, see, hear, and read, to work in adverse environmental conditions.
