Under general direction of the Operation's Supervisor, performs skilled technical electro/mechanical work in preventive maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of water reclamation equipment. Tasks and assignments may include heavy manual labor. Incumbent is expected to exercise sound judgment and initiative in resolving complex electro/mechanical problems. Work is reviewed through records, conferences and observation of results obtained. Performs other work as required.

  • Evaluates, diagnoses, troubleshoots and facilitates the repair of malfunctioning electro/mechanical equipment.
  • Assists in the procurement of electro/mechanical supplies and components necessary to effectively and efficiently operate, maintain and repair wastewater treatment equipment.
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate records and logs of the operation, preventive maintenance and repair of electro/mechanical components.
  • Repairs and installs piping, valves, and fittings for fluid and air-handling systems.
  • Responsible for maintaining uniform safety practices and procedures regarding maintenance and repair of electro-mechanical equipment in the Division.
  • Fabrication work including concrete forming, carpentry, cutting and welding metal.
  • Possession of high school diploma or G.E.D., supplemented by four years direct hands-on experience in the preventive maintenance, rehabilitation and repair of pumps, blowers, valves, conveyors, hydraulic systems and chemical feed equipment associated with wastewater treatment or an equivalent combination of training.
  • Must successfully pass a mechanical skills test prior to interview.
  • Education and experience in a field of production using a similar type of equipment.

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations: 

  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida driver's license. Applicants who possess a valid out of state driver's license must obtain the Florida driver's license within 10 days of employment.
  • Demonstrate skill in metal fabrication, including the ability to use an oxy/acetylene torch and various welding equipment.  Must be able to fabricate from drawings or examples.
  • Knowledge of piping, valves, and fittings, to include threaded, flanged and mechanical joint.
  • Knowledge and ability to use proper procedures in the piping repair and installation of fluid and air-handling systems.
  • Ability and willingness to perform heavy manual labor in adverse conditions as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety procedures.
  • Ability to learn and adhere to City purchasing principles and practices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, co-workers, and the general public.
  • Ability to access and enter data in computer.
  • Ability and willingness to respond to emergency situations as identified by City staff. 
  • Ability to evaluate and accomplish tasks in a manner consistent with Division goals and objectives.
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime, weekends, evenings and holidays as may be required.
  • Ability to work regularly scheduled hours.

 Physical and Mental Requirements: 

  • Ability to work and operate vehicle, i.e. pickup, van, etc., at night and during inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to hear, speak and understand conversations in English in a normal tone of voice, both in person and by telephone.
  • Ability to use senses including sight, smell, hearing and touch in the evaluation and troubleshooting of malfunctioning equipment.  Binocular vision required for depth perception.
  • Ability to see and read prints, letters, numbers, words, characters and symbols which are both large and small.
  • Ability to correctly identify colors and hues, tints, and shades of colors by sight.
  • Ability to walk, stand and sit for periods of up to one (1) hour.
  • Ability to print and draw letters, numbers, words, characters, diagrams and symbols.  Must be legible and understood by others.
  • Ability to use large and small hand tools which require the use of hands, wrists, and fingers.  Dexterity, including fine motor skills, required.
  • Ability to move back and forth and sideways while in a bending, kneeling or squatting position.
  • Ability to move from a standing or sitting position to a bending, kneeling or squatting position and vice versa periodically.
  • Ability to learn complex tasks and remember how to complete tasks without assistance once trained.
  • Ability to verbally communicate in person and by telephone.
  • Ability to perform data entry tasks on a computer.
  • Ability to climb stairs and/or ladders.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to 50 pounds over uneven terrain, up and down stairs and/or ladders.
  • Ability to lift and/or carry items which are awkward to grasp or hold on to.
  • Ability to lift items weighing up to 40 pounds above or down from over the head.
  • Ability to work in undesirable conditions which include heat, humidity, wetness, cold, dust, dirt, excessive noise, odorous environments and around mechanical equipment and high voltage.
  • Ability and willingness to enter and work in confined spaces as necessary when provided adequate safety devices. 
  • Ability to work around various hazardous chemicals and materials.
