Position Information

Collects a variety of marine water column and sediment samples and oceanographic circulation data; performs complex in-situ analyses and oceanographic field surveys and investigations; and performs other related duties as required.

Current Vacancy:

There is one vacancy with the

Department of Environmental Services,Environmental Quality Division. Position is located at Sand Island Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Collects marine water column samples in accordance with Federal and State guidelines; collected sediment samples by dredging or SCUBA diving; performs complex in-situ analyses of marine water column samples; documents sampling processes and procedures to assure acceptability for Federal and State standards; calibrates monitoring equipment to assure accuracy of readings; collects ocean circulation data; deploys current meters, drogues and other collected data and sample collection procedures; conducts oceanographic field surveys and investigations; using SCUBA equipment, inspects sewage outfalls and other marine discharges; arranges for and performs periodic maintenance and repair of monitoring vessel, boats, hydraulic winches, diving and other on-board equipment; participates in preparing plans for specific sampling activity in accordance with Federal and State requirements; assists in coordinating sampling cruises with departmental personnel or other agencies; operates a motor vehicle to commute to boat docking areas and to transport samples; may operate monitoring vessel or other boats. Work schedule is Monday - Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and may include weekends and holidays.

Special Working Conditions: Bends, squeezes, embolism, nitrogen narcosis, dangerous marine life (sharks, eels, etc.), boating hazards, waterborne diseases, infections, falls, cuts and chemical burns.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

Two years of experience in collecting and analyzing oceanographic, laboratory or related data.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT:

1.Valid driver's license (Type 3/automobile), prior to appointment; and

2.Valid basic SCUBA certificate, at time of application.
