SCOPE OF POSITION:

Able to read/create detailed sketches or notes according to specified dimensions by hand or by computer aided design (CAD) system. Plans and operates numerical control program and equipment to control contour path machining of parts on automatic machine tools.

  • Analyzes drawings, sketches, and design data of desired parts to determine dimension and configuration of cuts, selection of cutting tools, and machine speeds and feed rates.

  • Determines reference points and direction of machine cutting paths.

  • Computes angular and linear dimensions, radii, and curvatures, and outlines sequence of operations required to machine part.

  • Prepares geometric layouts using computer-assisted drafting software to show location of reference points and direction of cutting paths.

  • Assures quality of work through accuracy, neatness, paying attention to details, thorough understanding of information, with minimal amount of rework. Conveys personal commitment to quality by demonstrating good quality behavior. Identifies and acts upon opportunities to improve quality of material or process.

  • Changes tooling as required per drawings and/or materials.

  • Write instruction sheets and cutter lists to guide setup and operation of machine.

  • Writes program of machine instructions to regulate movement of machine along cutting path.

  • Compares computer program with original drawing to assure accuracy of machine instructions.

  • Revises program to eliminate instruction errors or omissions.

  • Observes operation of machine on trial run to prove programmed instructions.

  • Operates machine as required to generate parts necessary for production orders.

  • Reports unusual conditions or problems to supervisor.

  • Observes company safety rules and regulations.

  • Maintains good housekeeping in work area.

  • Ensure that hazardous material and waste handling is conducted within the guidelines of the training provided.

  • Ensures conformance to all aspects of the ISO 14001 standard and Construction Specialties' Environmental Management System (EMS), including its environmental policy while performing job functions that may have a significant impact on the environment.

  • Performs other duties assigned by management

KNOWLEDGE/ SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE/ EDUCATION: (Minimum Education and/or Experience required)

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and six to twelve months related manufacturing experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • One to three years of applied training and two to three years related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Architectural drafting background or related material takeoff experience helpful

  • Ability to read analyzes and interprets design data, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write instruction sheets, cutter lists, reports and business correspondence.

  • Has knowledge of construction and fabrication methods. Ability to use Computer-Aided Design (CAD) system.

  • Ability to use computer-assisted drafting software.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

  • The employee must continuously lift and/or move over 25 pounds and up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Performs in process and final inspection as required. Loads parts using overhead cranes. * Proof tests all programs, makes corrections, performs shop floor programming as necessary and documents any changes. * Machines and inspects parts to the quality and time standards set by the organization. * Reads and interprets all types of complex drawings and blueprints. * Uses various types of precision measuring instruments, such as: dial indicator, Vernier's, and micrometers to ensure close tolerances are achieved. * Actively participates and maintains a safe, clean, and orderly work area to 5'S standards at all times. * Maintains open communication and suggests improvements to supervision, planning, programming and co-workers. * Responsible for keeping accurate paperwork, and job routings at all times. * Continuously improves profitability through improving safety, quality, reducing manufacturing costs, reducing lead times, and working as a team member. Job Requirements The work performed generally requires an associate degree in machine tool technology or equivalent training and experience setting up, programming, and operating multi axis CNC equipment. Excellent machining skills and proficiency in reading and interpreting complex drawings/blueprints, use of precision measuring instruments is a must. Capable of operating overhead cranes, forklifts, and other material handling equipment. * Majority of work is performed indoors in a heated, non-air-conditioned, noisy environment. * Duties require standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, etc. for 8 to 12 hour shifts. * Capable of lifting 50 pounds intermittently, mobility to move around machine area, up and down stairs and/or ladders, and coordination / balance in order to safely operate production equipment. * Sense of sight, hearing and touch required to communicate with internal customers and operate production equipment.
